[Art-instructors] Update - classes resume Monday

Hi All,

Please excuse the weekend email, but given President McCullough's message, I thought it appropriate to send a follow up.

Resuming classes on Monday will not be easy for many. While most I suspect will be able to complete the semester as normal, recognize that some will find it challenging. Whether they directly witnessed or were impacted by the shootings themselves, or the events of Thursday bring up prior traumatic experiences please recognize that some may be so distressed that they will not be able to return to campus or their classes this semester. Additionally, there may be students who return to campus but struggle to be in the classroom or to complete their coursework.
Please be as flexible as possible in responding to student requests for excused absences, late completion of assignments, and incomplete grades. Your compassion and empathy will go a long way in helping students navigate this difficult time. There is a list of resources the university provides for students below, that I encourage you to share.
I also think it is important to recognize that nothing in any of our job descriptions suggest we would ever be called upon to gather students together and shelter in place to avoid the threat of a mass shooting. Yet many did exactly this. Over the past few days, I've witnessed faculty and staff acting with incredible compassion and professionalism. Know that I am deeply appreciative, but I also ask that you please make sure that you are taking care of yourselves as well.
We are generally very good at extending grace and care to others, but often less conscientious stewards of our mental and physical health. At times like this please prioritize self-care, check in on one another, offer support, and should you need help - reach out. The university provides resources for faculty and staff. These are shared below as well. If there are ways I can help, do not hesitate to contact me.
We have one week of classes left. We will get through this together.
