Dear library advocate,
Congress is on recess through early September, which means members of
Congress are in their home district in order to attend events and meet with
constituents. Recess is a great opportunity for library advocates to host
visits and tours that lawmakers how E-Rate supports affordable,
reliable internet access that powers libraries and their communities.
To help you get started, ALA has created a new resource, Show Up for E-Rate
<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.org%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2F2026-07%2FShow%2520Up%2520for%2520E-Rate.pdf&data=05%7C02%7Cfla-facrl%40lists.fsu.edu%7C9001b9da9d1f4d06f8d308deed6b4dd4%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C639209243770440633%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C80000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=pTOMCiY96tP4ahe2T%2BnapmRJdIoXMdDar4TpakTye%2FQ%3D&reserved=0>,
with tips for inviting congressional offices to your library and making the
case for why E-Rate matters. We encourage library advocates, state chapter
leaders, and library workers in public and state libraries to use this
resource to plan a visit during an upcoming congressional recess or state
work period.
The resource outlines simple steps for planning a congressional visit,
including how to invite lawmakers and staff, prepare local examples of
E-Rate's impact, structure a library tour or meeting, and follow up after
the visit. It also includes messaging guidance to help advocates explain
how E-Rate connects people to education, employment, health information,
government services, and other essential online resources.
Hosting a congressional visit is one of the most effective ways to help
lawmakers see E-Rate in action and understand what is at stake for
libraries and the people who depend on them. Use our Show Up resources to
support your advocacy and build relationships with elected leaders.
Summer 2026 congressional recess dates are:
-
House of Representatives: July 24 – August 28
-
Senate: August 10-September 13
Now is the time to reach out and schedule a visit. As always, please reach
out to ALA's Public Policy and Advocacy office. We're here to help!
