[COGS] Fw: Seeking Graduate Student Volunteers for AHP Hearings

Dear Representatives,

I'm passing along this call for graduate student volunteers:


Good morning, Everyone!

If you have received this message, then my office has assumed (hopefully correctly!) that you know of some graduate students who would be quality candidates to help with Academic Honor Policy hearings.

Our specific need is to recruit graduate-student volunteers who are not too close to graduating to create a sustainable shortlist of panelists; however, we will take willing volunteers at any stage of their programming!

If you would not mind passing this message along to FSU graduate students via any listservs or social media you operate, Katie-Dean and I would appreciate your outreach!

What does serving as a hearing panelist entail? The details are below (and a procedural overview is attached):

Graduate students who are interested in serving as hearing panelists should do the following:


  1.
Indicate to Joshua Morgan and Katie-Dean Moore if they are a new panelist or if they have helped with AHP hearings before. If they are new, then we will sign them up for a self–paced Canvas training to prepare.

  2.
Once they have been added to our shortlist of volunteers and we send out an announcement containing hearing dates/times, they should email us (jlmorgan at fsu.edu / kd.moore at fsu.edu) to specify which hearing(s) they can assist with. We'll verify that they do not know the student(s) involved in the cases/allegations (for enhanced due process).

  3.
Obviously, panelists should treat the hearings they have volunteered for with intentionality; these are high–stakes events that require timeliness and a commitment to reviewing the case materials in advance of the hearing dates.

  4.
An incentive is that volunteers can log this activity as service to the university and community on their CVs, preparing their portfolios for potential lecturer, tenure-track, and administrator positions they may be vying for. It may also help them evaluate and utilize integrity/conduct policies at future institutions.

  5.
All hearings are held via Zoom.
