Good morning, All.

Please see below.

----------------
Dear Colleagues,
I’m pleased to invite you to the closing reception and artist talk for Water Ways: Indigenous Ecologies and Florida Heritage on Thursday, February 26, at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts.
The reception begins at 5:00 pm, followed by an artist talk and performance at 6:00 pm by Samboleap Tol, whose work has been a central presence in the exhibition.
Samboleap Tol is a Khmer artist working with kinetic sound sculpture. Her practice engages the postcolonial diasporic psyche, examining how political disruption and displacement shape generational understandings of love, faith, and dignity.
Her talk and performance, titled The Tortoise as a Passage: Crossing Rivers, reflects on The Cosmic Tortoise, an animated teakwood sculpture created in response to the sudden passing of her father during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on Cambodian artistic traditions, Buddhist ritual, and Southeast Asian manuscript cultures, the work serves as a vessel for grief, memory, and transition. With the press of a button, the sculpture opens to reveal a handwritten manuscript accompanied by an early-twentieth-century Khmer funerary song intended to guide the dead between realms. Music, movement, and mythology place the work at the threshold between this world and the afterlife.
During the talk, Tol will discuss the development of the artwork and offer reflections for artists engaging their cultural heritage. The presentation concludes with a gratitude dance honoring the artisans and culture bearers who contributed to the work during its development in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
I hope you’ll join us for this closing event and please share the invitation with your students!
