Join us for a virtual conversation with Studio Art alumni —



Success Stories — ART ENTREPRENEURSHIP



Success Stories is a continuing series of talks with art professionals, many of whom graduated from the Studio Art program at FSU. The goal of these talks is to provide art students with insights, inspiration, and constructive advice for their own career paths.



For this talk, our focus is on art entrepreneurship. Our speakers will share insights about their businesses and strategies for building an art career.



The panelists will speak for about an hour, followed by a Q & A session.

Our guest speakers are:



Robert Blake aka Peenpoon, Tallahassee native, holds a BS in Art from Florida State University, class of 2018. Early on, Robert became interested in creating and performing live visuals at music festivals around the Southeastern US. After working as an exhibit designer out of university, he continued to hone his skills as a 3D artist. Robert is currently a full-time maker of digital art who is thriving in the new art market for NFTs. Guided by the personal mantra technology + expression = freedom, he seeks to express deeply personal and existential human narratives.

Sarah Painter is a graduate of the B.A. Studio Art program. She serves as Public Art Manager for the Council on Culture & Arts and is also pursuing her M.S. in Art Education at FSU, focusing on social reconstructionist curriculum. Sarah has worked in the arts for the past decade as a practicing artist, curator, educator, and arts administrator, with a focus on community building. She has worked with municipalities, businesses, schools, and non-profits to produce public artworks across the U.S. and internationally. As a painter, Sarah’s style constantly evolves as she creates site-specific work in social consideration of the setting and community. Her studio practice falls somewhere between abstract realism and contemporary surrealism, touching on more personal themes of feminism and identity as a woman.

Tracy Toler-Phillips is a highly skilled photographer, retoucher, and photography art director based in New York City with a career spanning over 30 years in the photographic market. Tracy's expertise lies in photography, photo production, art direction, and retouching for brands, celebrities and photographers worldwide. Her work has been published internationally and her clientele includes well-known fashion brands such as Madewell, Kate Spade, Ann Taylor/Loft, Josie Maran, plus global editions of Elle Magazine and more. In addition to her work in photography and retouching, Tracy spent ten years as a photography and Photoshop instructor for the prestigious Pratt Institute. She is currently in the role of Editorial Photo Retouching Manager at J. Crew Group. Originally from South Florida, she holds a B.S. in Studio Art from Florida State University and an A.A.S. in Photography from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. She currently lives in the suburbs on New York, over the bridge in NJ.

Thursday, March 23 - Sculpture Candidate Talk (Laura Nova), 5:15 – 6:15 pm in FAB 205 (not FAB249)

Laura Nova is an artist, educator, and activist who lives and works on New York’s Lower East Side, creating festive, absurdist spectacles that unite generations and diverse communities. The first Public Artist in Residence to be embedded in New York City’s Department for the Aging, Nova brings expertise and empathy to her projects and actions, designing each element to enhance social wellness and decrease social isolation. Working in festivals, public monuments, and the city street, Nova delivers spiels to homebound New Yorkers, organizes an older adult cheerleading squad and designs crafting kits, guides, and costumes that help nurture emerging activists of all ages.

Julie Dickover, Director of the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College, will be giving a presentation on her curatorial practice this Friday (3/24) at 1pm in the MFA seminar room at CAB. Please see the attached poster. She'll focus specifically on how projects come together, how she finds funding, how she builds relationships with artists, and opportunities in our region, and we'll have lots of time for questions from students. Please join us.
