[Seuce-cci] [EXTERNAL] GRAD NSSLHA Advisor question

Hi,

We do not have a grad NSSLHA chapter as we are an undergrad only program but also see waxing and waning participation depending on the event.

We tend to have better participation w/ evening virtual meetings than on-campus in-person meetings and we always have a guest speaker at meetings, which are monthly. Throughout the semester we usually have 2-3 additional “events” students can participate in if they want to. Usually these are our state Legislative Day (spring) and ASHA Virtual Advocacy Day (fall), 1 community service event per semester, and 1 social event per semester.

We also use a “course” in our LMS, Canvas to make announcements to members and any time announcements are posted for professional development or community outreach activities, I try to “highlight” the “reasons why” students should attend such as “great networking opportunity” or “experience advocating for profession”, etc. because students are more likely to participate if they can see how the activity will benefit them when applying for jobs (SLPA) or grad programs.

I hope this helps.

AnnMarie Knight

Here in Hammond, we, too, are seeing the same thing. What we have offered is a once a semester, virtual meeting, as they seem to not want to physically stay at a meeting on campus. We’ve also tried to bring in speakers that talk about resumes and jobs, Including someone that we found on Instagram who helps résumé- build specifically for speech and language pathology students. We also try to keep our “business“ information to a minimum and send that via email. Additionally, we offer service hours in a very flexible way. For example, they can get hours for donating items to drives on campus for specific charities or organizations, instead of say, spending actual time anywhere. In their defense, a lot of our students have jobs and find it very difficult to manage school work, as well as a service organization. So, we try to be flexible and how they can participate. For what it’s worth, it’s not just you. I hope some of these ideas help.

We see the same thing! I just did some research/presentation about this new generation of students (Gen Z).
We found that they are more motivated by what will ‘look good’ and help them get into grad school / job applications; so we’ve planned activities that they can ‘use’ in that way (Walk for Alzheimer’s/Apraxia, Special Olympics, etc.).
They also just want info in small manageable chunks, instead of meetings (I can’t say I blame them); so we’ve started using Instagram for announcements and info (just set up the account with the advisor as the ‘admin’, so the permissions can be granted to the NSSLHA officer in charge of communications, then switched the next year).
I hope these suggestions are helpful.

Good morning,

We are interested in getting input from other Grad NSSLHA Advisors regarding the level of participation and keeping your group active and participating.

Since our return from COVID, we have noticed a decline in participation and activity within our group. We have tried offering door prizes, food, etc at meetings and have met with the officer board numerous times.

Please share information and suggestions.

Thanks,
Veronica
