Dear ISL Affiliates and friends,

Hope all is well!

Yesterday, FSU made the formal announcement<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.fsu.edu%2Fnews%2Fhealth-medicine%2F2025%2F03%2F18%2Ffsu-names-health-data-expert-new-head-of-institute-for-successful-longevity%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cisl%40lists.fsu.edu%7C6f50b3aa87ee49feced108dd66d66394%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638779793154731163%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=2uoZMrAgH9CrSkK2xieRm0ifYpzICy2WACdoBDcmtOE%3D&reserved=0> of my appointment as Director of our Institute.
I am deeply honored to step into this important role and to continue building on the incredible foundation of research, collaboration, and community engagement that defines ISL. I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for your support—your dedication to advancing aging research and improving the lives of older adults makes ISL the dynamic and impactful institute it is today.

Over the past several months as Interim Director, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with many of you to launch new initiatives, including our three research working groups—Advanced Technology, Basic Science, and Clinical Research—to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration. We have also expanded ISL’s public engagement efforts<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.fsu.edu%2Fnews%2Fhealth-medicine%2F2024%2F10%2F11%2Ffsu-discovery-days-panel-on-aging-and-technology-engages-community-discusses-challenges-and-opportunities%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cisl%40lists.fsu.edu%7C6f50b3aa87ee49feced108dd66d66394%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638779793159192758%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=lWnQ51spPLmfMtD3cDqa12%2BRCSOdNcgBwDxQi5Zi%2FmE%3D&reserved=0>, reinforcing our commitment to bringing aging research beyond the lab and into the community. Once again, I would like to thank my predecessor and long-time mentor, Dr. Neil Charness, for his unwavering support and huge help for the smooth transition!

I am also pleased to share that I have been promoted to Full Professor, a milestone that reflects not only my own academic journey but also the support and collaboration I have received from colleagues across ISL and beyond. This recognition strengthens my commitment to expanding ISL’s research impact, strengthening partnerships, and supporting our students and faculty in developing innovative solutions for longevity and aging challenges.

With advances in data science, AI, and digital health, we are at a transformative moment in aging research. I am confident that, together, we can push the boundaries of discovery and application to improve health and well-being for older adults!

Yesterday, we held our Student Poster Day event<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fisl.fsu.edu%2Farticle%2F2025-isl-student-poster-day-and-keynote-presentation&data=05%7C02%7Cisl%40lists.fsu.edu%7C6f50b3aa87ee49feced108dd66d66394%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638779793159225099%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=klILLpjwinircWMd5%2Bul0GOyV6xPfvORU7uCaFW2w4w%3D&reserved=0> at Claude Pepper Center, with our guest keynote Dr. Rui Zhang<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmed.umn.edu%2Fbio%2Frui-zhang&data=05%7C02%7Cisl%40lists.fsu.edu%7C6f50b3aa87ee49feced108dd66d66394%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638779793159239431%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=t1XMa7GJISWWTwgT7YFiYScrvTl68NsD%2FCoq%2FLnwT3Y%3D&reserved=0> from University of Minnesota, our beloved Provost Jim Clark, and more importantly, 15 amazing student presenters from many different colleges and departments across campus. We are happy to announce that the winners of this year’s Student Poster Awards went to Cole Patoine, PhD Candidate from Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences (First Place), Steven Medarev, PhD Candidate from Department of Biomedical Science (Second Place), and Victoria Valko, an undergraduate student from School of Information (Third Place)! Congratulations to these amazing students and their advisors! Many thanks to the three judges Drs. Lynn Panton, Ravider Nagpal, and Zilong Xie for their meticulous work and insightful feedback!

I’d like to also congratulate Steven Medarev on winning this year’s Esther & Del Grosser Scholarship, with $1,000 award to support his doctoral research. As a PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at FSU’s College of Medicine, Steven is studying a key protein called adiponectin, which helps protect blood vessels. As people age, their levels of this protein decrease, which can lead to problems with blood flow and a higher risk of heart disease. His research focuses on understanding how this happens and exploring ways to prevent or slow down these changes. By identifying new strategies to keep blood vessels healthy as we age, his work supports the Institute for Successful Longevity’s mission to promote healthier aging and improve quality of life for older adults! Thank you, Drs. Juliann Cortese, Terra Bradley, and Sladjana Lukic for the evaluation of the application materials of this year’s Esther & Del Grosser scholarship!
