Subject: [Isl] In reflection and support from ISL
Dear ISL Affiliates and Friends,

Like many of you, I am heartbroken by the tragic incident that took place last Thursday on our campus. While I’m grateful to be safe and that those close to me were safe, I know this event has shaken all of us—students, faculty, staff, and our broader community. My heart goes to those whose who are impacted!

I want to share something personal: I had initially planned to have a Zoom meeting with ISL staff around noon that day, but I ended up canceling that meeting due to a scheduling conflict. If that happened, one of our staff had planned to be in the Union for that meeting. I was also on campus that day and had to shelter in my lab with a few others.

Moments like this remind us of the fragility of life and the importance of compassion. We often don’t know the burdens people carry, and I truly believe that if we all extended more kindness, empathy, and patience to those around us, this world might see fewer acts of desperation and violence.

As we all process this in our own way, please know that your well-being matters.
