[Isl] Announcing Chairs of ISL Working Groups

I’m thrilled to announce three Chairs of ISL Working Groups:

Basic Science Working Group

Basic Science Working Group focuses on investigating the fundamental biological, psychological, and social mechanisms of aging and uncovering new knowledge that could lead to groundbreaking treatments and preventive strategies.

Chair: Dr. Ravinder Nagpal

Dr. Ravinder Nagpal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Integrative Physiology, whose research focuses on the gut microbiome's role in aging-associated intestinal and neurocognitive health. He earned his Ph.D. in Food & Dairy Microbiology from the National Dairy Research Institute in Haryana, India, and completed postdoctoral training in gut microbiology at Juntendo School of Medicine in Tokyo and Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. Dr. Nagpal’s lab aims to uncover mechanisms of gut dysbiosis and leverage this knowledge to develop nutritional and pharmacological interventions to improve metabolic and neurodegenerative health, including Alzheimer's disease.

Clinical Research Working Group

Clinical Research Working Group focuses on translational research that bridges the gap between laboratory research and practical, clinical applications and enhancing clinical practices and interventions that improve health outcomes for older adults.

Chair: Dr. Julia Sheffler

Dr. Julia Sheffler is an Assistant Professor at the College of Medicine’s Center for Translational Behavioral Science. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University in 2018. Her research broadly involves the development and assessment of behavioral interventions for chronic conditions, with an emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia risk reduction. Dr. Sheffler’s lab currently focuses on developing scalable community lifestyle programs that help older adults make sustainable changes to their lifestyle, supporting healthy brain aging.

Advanced Technology Working Group

Advanced Technology Working Group focuses on emerging technologies such as AI to improve the quality of life for older adults and technologies that can be integrated into daily living, assist with health monitoring, and provide cognitive and social engagement.

Chair: Dr. Zhe He

Dr. Zhe He is an Associate Professor in the School of Information and Interim Director of the Institute for Successful Longevity at Florida State University, where he also leads the eHealth Lab. He holds courtesy appointments in Medicine, Computer Science, and Statistics and directs the Biostatistics, Informatics, and Research Design Program (BIRD) for the UF-FSU Clinical and Translational Science Award. His research, funded by NIH, AHRQ, Eli Lilly, and Amazon, focuses on biomedical informatics, AI, and big data to improve population health and advance research.
