Dr. Emerald T. Nguyen is a Program Official within the Division of Behavioral and Social Research (DBSR) at the National Institute on Aging (NIA). She manages a scientific portfolio that encompasses research on how various macrosocial factors impact health and wellbeing during mid- and later-life. She also helps oversee the Centers on the Demography and Economics of Aging program.
Previously, she was a Data Scientist at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). Prior to coming to the National Institutes of Health in 2017, Dr. Nguyen was a Science and Technology Policy Fellow sponsored by the American Sociological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. As a fellow, she worked in Congress on healthcare and immigration policy issues. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California-Davis.
Research Interests/Portfolio

  *   Influences of social and environmental exposures on aging and health.
  *   Effects of extreme weather and disasters on health.
  *   Geographic health disparities, including rural/urban differences.
  *   Family demography and caregiving.
  *   Social network characteristics and processes, and their consequences for health.
  *   Life course impacts of criminal justice involvement.
