FSU Institute for Successful Longevity gladly presents the lineup for the Brown Bag Lecture Series talks for Fall 2024 and January 2025. The Brown Bag Lecture Series will take place on Wednesdays at 12 PM and will be held in person (FSU Innovation Hub Pitch Room 112) and online over Zoom. We hope the hybrid mode will allow people to interact with the presenters and socialize and still provide convenience for people who cannot attend in person to learn about the great work of our affiliates!

On Sept 18, Drs. Geraldine Martorella and Hongyu Miao will present their work at FSU Brain Science and Symptom Management Center

Title: "Non-pharmacological interventions for pain in older adults at the FSU Brain Science and Symptom Management Center"

Abstract: Established in April 2022, the BSSMC's mission is the research, discovery, education, and community outreach in the areas of prevention, amelioration, and management of pain and other symptoms using nonpharmacological and interdisciplinary approaches. Examples of projects include the use of brain stimulation in patients with knee osteoarthritis, and the use of mindfulness or combined brain stimulation and meditation before and after undergoing a total knee replacement surgery.

Bio: Geraldine Martorella is an associate professor of nursing, co-director of the BSSMC and fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Her program of research consists in developing and evaluating innovative non-pharmacological interventions for pain management and chronic pain prevention in older adults. She is currently a member of the American Psychological Association’s Guideline Development Panel for the Treatment of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain in Adults.

Hongyu Miao is a professor of nursing, professor of statistics, and co-director of BSSMC. His research focuses on clinical trial, machine learning, wearable sensor, and biomedical applications in, e.g., cancer, infectious disease, and aging. He has acquired multiple NSF and NIH grants as PI or MPI, published more than 110 peer-reviewed research articles, collaborated on more than 20 R01 and research center grants, and developed several education programs in data science and clinical trial.
