Dear Bonnie,

Thanks so much for getting in touch with Jaime and me.  I do take your point, and am sorry that the typo in the link emphasized librarians when it was supposed to say “librarianship.”   As the originator of the conference title and theme, I will admit that it never occurred to me that the word “librarianship” might disenfranchise staff, who are indeed critically important to the academic library.  I meant librarianship as the overall work of the library, staff and librarians alike, though I’ll certainly be more thoughtful about how I use the word in future.  I truly regret it if any library workers opted not to submit a proposal because they felt unwelcome—I have no idea how the various presenters are classified at the institutions where they work, and the review process is blind.

Just FYI, I’m attaching a copy of the Call for Proposals that went out—we don’t specify the word “librarian” anywhere, just “libraries” and “librarianship.”  I understand that’s not your point, but just wanted you to know that we did try to write an inclusive CfP.

Maybe that was done on purpose because the subject matter pertains to teaching and instruction, which is most often the work of librarians.
This invitation comes at a time when academic libraries are trying to be more inclusive and equitable, when we are trying to breakdown the librarian/staff dichotomy and show value in the work of all library employees. This undercuts the message of inclusion and importance we are so desperately trying to communicate.

Incidentally, the ACRL conference had Librarian language as well and when I pointed it out to them, they immediately changed the language to be inclusive of all library employees.
