Breakout Session Title: Even the Odds: Libraries Solving the Student Textbook Problem

Session Description: Recent reports tell us that students worry more about the cost of textbooks than the cost of tuition. Sixty-five percent of students have opted not to buy a required text because of cost. Completing a college degree is expensive—only about 33 percent of American adults have a bachelor’s degree—yet that degree can add up to a million dollars in greater lifetime earnings. Sadly, many college students drop out for financial reasons, often owing less than a thousand dollars. Meanwhile, textbook publishers rake in the profits, with the cost of textbooks rising 800 percent over the past thirty years. What can academic libraries do to even the odds for our students? Librarians from two Florida universities—one public, one private—will show how they are contributing to student success and retention by providing learning resources for free or dramatically reduced costs. Presenters will describe a two-pronged approach, promoting and supporting the creation of open course materials through on-campus publishing initiatives, while also providing students access to traditional course texts through reserve collections. The session will cover obtaining funds, creating incentives for faculty participation, enlisting the support of your campus bookstore, identifying most-needed textbooks, setting up and maintaining the collection, and marketing your program.

Learning Outcomes: • Learning outcome: Attendees will learn how academic libraries can contribute to student success and retention initiatives through the development of non-traditional collections. • Learning outcome: Attendees will learn successful strategies for working with faculty to find, create, and assign open course materials on their campuses. • Learning outcome: Attendees will learn how to work with partners across their campuses to identify, fund, and maintain a current textbook collection at their libraries.
