Good afternoon all,
Thanks Michelle! I really like the topic of Bolstering Communication with Staff and/or Supervisors, though tips on leadership and becoming excellent managers might work really well for the Annual Conference theme of unleashing your superpower…
What does everyone else think? Any other topic suggestions?
Thanks,
Craig

Craig,
No problem.
A few suggestions:
· Bolstering Communication with Staff and/or Supervisors (talking about ways to improve communication at all levels)
· Telling our story- discussing ways to tell our story as academic libraries that don’t have ROI figures that work for public libraries and have maybe more nebulous connections to retention/graduation rates
· Using Assessment or Micro-assessment to show how much libraries impact their campuses and in what ways- or how to gather evidence of impact or feedback using brief, micro-assessments?
· Tips on how to become excellent managers and to grow excellent managers among the staff
I’m not sure these are fleshed out enough or what we’re looking for but maybe they’ll help a bit.
Michelle

Importance: High
Good afternoon,
We had discussed at the recent FACRL Board Meeting having another FACRL panel presentation at this year’s upcoming FLA Annual Conference! T
The deadline for submitting is September 1st and the conference submission details are below in the forwarded e-mail. Does anyone have any suggestions for a proposal for this year’s conference that fits with the theme? Please send any ideas and remember, sending me a great idea does not commit you to help us write our present the break-out panel in any way! ;)
Last year at the FLA Annual Conference, FACRL sponsored a coffee break at 8:30 – 9:30 AM on the first day of the conference, as well as submitting and presenting the following panel presentation:

Redefining College Readiness: Library Partnerships that Support Student Transition
It is clear that learning information literacy skills is essential to college students’ education. What is not always clear is how best to reach them. At a time when new students are learning to navigate several new spaces, processes, and relationships at the same time, where does the library fit in? How can academic libraries help support this transition and demonstrate our worth to students—and other campus entities?
Academic libraries are in a unique position to contribute to both the academic and social aspects of students’ lives. Vincent Tinto’s (1993) social interaction model shows that student success and retention are significantly affected by how connected a student feels to the institution, a theory supported by Johnson (1997) and Rusing and Poole (2002), among others. Outreach efforts engage students and make them feel integrated with the university and comfortable with the library so they keep coming back—which will benefit them academically.
To engage the most students possible, academic libraries need to cast their nets wide, partnering with other campus departments in both Academic and Student Affairs that interact with students in different ways. Examples of successful partnerships, such as Housing, New Student Programs, and Student Support Services, will be shared and help attendees to envision collaborations at their own institutions. Additionally, some of the richest partnerships can come from students serving as peer educators who can help reach and engage fellow students in new areas and in fresh ways. FGCU Library Student Ambassadors will share their experiences of interacting with their peers in reference, instruction, and outreach efforts.
Characteristics of first-year students in transition will be discussed along with best practices for engaging with them. Attendees will identify campus departments with which they could collaborate and develop a plan to forge partnerships with them. Practical considerations and tips will be shared to get the most from these collaborative efforts. While academic librarians are the primary audience, public librarians would benefit from learning ways to form partnerships, which they could extrapolate to the collaborations they create with the larger community.
Learning Outcomes:
* Participants will understand characteristics of students in transition.
* Participants will gain examples of successful partnerships and programs to engage students.
* Participants will identify potential partnerships and develop a plan to work with them to reach and engage students.
Thank you!
Craig
