Dear colleagues,
This coming Wednesday, October 19, the State Board of Education is holding a meeting<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.fldoe.org/policy/state-board-of-edu/meetings/2022/2022-10-19/__;!!PhOWcWs!yqyGP5zzEYSwc3_p3szU-NAXziAGSw8KKc7ZMBsYaItNJFRUei0oYE82v0ImpnBNNqwKekpvwuPeVDFczfKZ7POkHAZJcw$ > from 9-12 at the Caribe Royale hotel in Orlando (near Disney) to propose the adoption of several anti-library, anti-education, and anti-LGBT rules that directly affect our librarian and teacher allies statewide:
* An anti-trans bathroom rule;<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://flrules.org/Gateway/View_notice.asp?id=26334741__;!!PhOWcWs!yqyGP5zzEYSwc3_p3szU-NAXziAGSw8KKc7ZMBsYaItNJFRUei0oYE82v0ImpnBNNqwKekpvwuPeVDFczfKZ7PNRSXrKJQ$ > (Deadline: 10/18)
* A rule that proposes to strip K-2 teachers' licenses for "saying 'gay;'"<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.flrules.org/gateway/View_Notice.asp?id=26330182__;!!PhOWcWs!yqyGP5zzEYSwc3_p3szU-NAXziAGSw8KKc7ZMBsYaItNJFRUei0oYE82v0ImpnBNNqwKekpvwuPeVDFczfKZ7PPwfNeMCA$ > (Deadline: 10/17)
* A rule to evaluate library materials;<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.flrules.org/gateway/View_Notice.asp?id=26331540__;!!PhOWcWs!yqyGP5zzEYSwc3_p3szU-NAXziAGSw8KKc7ZMBsYaItNJFRUei0oYE82v0ImpnBNNqwKekpvwuPeVDFczfKZ7PPpFHW8lw$ > (Deadline: 10/17)
You may have a few questions:
* What is a rule? Rules are how state agencies implement legislation after it's passed.
* How do these rules affect me? In addition to creating a climate of fear and hate for K-12 teachers, parents, children, and Black/LGBTQ+ Floridians, they also create an anti-learning, anti-inquiry climate that make our mission of encouraging intellectual freedom and the basic dignity of all patrons more challenging.
* What can I do? If you can make the meeting in person, that would be ideal. If you can't, click any of the proposed rules above to make public comment by the deadline. Public comment is the process where stakeholders weigh in on proposed rules.
* What should I say? Anything that, in your judgment, adds credibility to your statement. For example, in my comment about library materials, I mention the important role that libraries play in fostering intellectual inquiry, fomenting critical thinking, and creating K-12 graduates who are bright, open-minded, and well-trained for higher education and future employment.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Blake Robinson (he/him)
