Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a twelve-month, non-tenure track
Director of Research and Instructional Services and Librarian Associate Professor faculty
position in the Department of Public Services; KSU Library System which begins December
2019.
Distinguishing Features of this Position:
Under the direct supervision of the Department Chair for Public Services, the KSU Library
System seeks a dynamic, collegial, flexible, service-oriented, and collaborative middle-level
leader for a multi-campus library system. We seek a leader who strongly believes in striving for
excellence, developing a learning organization, and continuous professional development for all
employees.
This leader will have a focus on student success and providing excellence in patron-centered
services for the Research and Instructional Services Unit. As a member of KSU Library
System's highly collaborative and collegial organization, the selected individual will have a
demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends in academic public services and
undergraduate research support.
This includes multiple reference service models, information literacy instruction, distance learning support, services tailored to different undergraduate population groups, project
planning, and assessment.
This individual will have the ability to provide leadership, mentorship, and vision for the
Research and Instructional Services Unit including developing and implementing creative, cost effective, and efficient services.
The home location for this position is the Kennesaw Campus; however, this individual will be
expected to spend time at the Marietta Campus and other KSU sites as needed. This position
requires working a minimum of 40 hours a week and a flexible schedule, including some nights
and weekends, at the various KSU learning sites as needed.
Major Responsibilities:
Librarianship and Unit Leadership Expectations (90%)
1)Leadership: Lead the Research and Instructional Services Unit with contributions that support
excellence in collections, facilities, organizational development, and services to meet the needs
of library users, while improving the Unit's overall effectiveness and efficiencies of operations.
Participate in the KSU Library System's Senior-Officer-Present Program. Strong analytical and
problem-solving skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work
effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleague
2)Supervision: Supervise, train, guide, and mentor Research and Instructional Services Unit
personnel in prioritization, establishing workloads, and setting expectations in compliance with
national standards and best USG practices. Identify, develop, and advocate for training and
professional development opportunities for Unit. Participate in librarian and staff annual reviews.
3)Policy and Procedures Development: Gather, review, write, update, and post policies and
procedures for the Research and Instructional Services Unit with appropriate input from library
administration and other Units.
4)Strategic Planning: Lead and guide the Research and Instructional Services Unit in the
strategic planning process for both the Unit and for all Unit programs, such as reference services.
5)Assessment: Work with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Assessment Librarian, and
Library Administration to create, analyze, update, plan, and evaluate the contributions of the
Unit regarding KSU Library System's Strategic Plan, KSU Library System's Annual Report,
SACSCOC / accreditation reports, Improve KSU, and the annual collection of academic library
statistics for ACRL and other requestors.
6)Teamwork: Communicate and collaborate with other Units, library staff, and Library
Administration to improve and expand services for students and faculty. Foster a culture of
excellence in services and facilitating the work of others.
7)Representation: Represent the Research and Instructional Services Unit / Library at meetings
as appropriate. Communicate effectively with users, vendors, other KSU units, and outside
entities
8)Promotion Criteria: Ability to meet established expectations for library promotion.
Responsible for mentoring and guiding direct reports in understanding and working towards
these criteria.
9)Professional Development: Ability to be self-directed with creating their customized
professional development annually while helping their direct reports in the yearly development
of professional development plans.
10)Liaison Program: Participate in the Undergraduate faculty liaison program as a member of a
specific subject team, which can include collection development, outreach, and instruction.
11)Reference: Provide research assistance (in person, by phone, via chat, or other
communication modes) to students and other members of the KSU community.
Service (5%)
Perform KSU Library System service, KSU University service, and library profession service for
an average of approximately 60 hours annually.
Scholarship (5%)
Participate in scholarship, research, and creative activity appropriate at the rank of Librarian
Associate Professor, with the approval of your supervisor and Library Administration. Produce
annually evidence that scholarship, research, and creative activity have been professionally
published, presented, reviewed, or shared.
Required Education - Experiences - Skills:

Required Qualification:
1.Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program
or the foreign equivalent.
2.Minimum three years of successful and increasingly responsible professional experience.
3.Experience supervising, mentoring, and training.
4.Demonstrated exceptional written, oral, presentation, teaching, analytical, organizational, team management, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate appropriately within, and outside of, the library.
5.Experience working collaboratively with multiple constituencies, including, but not limited to:
students, instructional faculty, university staff, and librarian peers. Ability to function effectively
in a team environment.
6.Working knowledge of current and emerging professional library principles, methods,
procedures, and best practices especially in relation to information literacy instruction, reference, first-year student success, and upper-division undergraduate student needs.
7.Aptitude for detailed work and multitasking in addition to strong analytical, organizational,
team management, project planning, and team-building skills.
8.Ability to meet library faculty standards for librarianship, job performance, scholarship,
service, and professional development at the Librarian Associate Professor rank.
9.Creativity in problem-solving.
10.Working knowledge of Office suite applications including spreadsheets.
Desired Qualifications:
1.Five years of successful and increasingly responsible professional experience in an academic
library.
2.Two years supervisory experience of other librarians.
3.Project management and workflow analysis experience.
4.Experience working in a consortia environment with a shared ILS.
5.Experience working with vendors that provide reference and instructional services such as chat reference.
6.Evidence of publication and / or professional presentation in a library discipline.
