Is Florida's Sea Breeze Really Changing? A 21-Year Climatology Testing Synoptic vs. Thermal Drivers of Coastal Sea Breeze Behavior

By Ben Tobin

Description: Motivated by perceived changes in sea breeze behavior near Tallahassee and observed increasing coastal sea surface temperatures, and its relevance to coastal development, this project builds a 21-year climatology (2002–2022) of sea breeze fronts across Florida to test whether those changes occur for broad regions of Florida. This goal necessitated the development of a technique to track sea breezes. Two parallel investigations explore the relative roles of synoptic wind versus land-sea thermal gradient in driving day-to-day sea breeze behavior.

Accessing Open-Source Large Language Models on Skynet with Python

By Brendon Gutierrez

Description: This talk will demonstrate how COAPS members can access and interact with open-source large language models hosted on Skynet. A dedicated Skynet node equipped with an NVIDIA A100 GPU has been configured to run an LLM continuously, providing a shared inference service for the community. We will introduce the Python API for connecting to the service, submitting prompts, and incorporating model responses into scripts, notebooks, and research workflows. The session will include practical examples and guidance for getting started. The service is currently configured to run a Gemma 4 model, although the underlying model may evolve as the platform is updated. No prior experience with deploying or managing large language models is required.

NOTE: Please feel free to forward/share this invitation with other groups/disciplines that might be interested in this talk/topic. All are welcome to attend.
