The (Unusual) Olympic Games

The Olympic Games are a time to unite the countries of the world in friendly competition, and after more than a year of isolation and quarantine, the Summer Games seem like they should be the perfect event to celebrate what was an otherwise trying year. At least on paper. The reality is that much like 2020, the world is still dealing with unusual circumstances, COVID-19 protocols, and a “new normal” this year. Unfortunately, the Olympic Games are no exception.

...Social support is an important facet of endurance, but we can train our brains to focus on the task at hand despite unexpected circumstances, said Megan M. Buning, a teaching specialist in the Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching at Florida State University and an approved mental performance consultant in the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee's registry and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

FSU research associate working as sport psychologist with USA Track & Field team at Tokyo Olympics

As a research associate at Florida State University’s Florida Center for Reading Research, Christopher Stanley is focused on human development and performance — how people learn, manage mistakes and make improvements in educational domains.

For the next several weeks, the human performances he will be focused on are those of the athletes on the USA Track & Field team as they compete at the Tokyo Olympics. Stanley is serving as the team’s sport psychologist.

Language Learning Begins At Birth

...The Chautauqua Women’s Club introduced Dr. Barbara Foorman as a professor at the Florida Center for Reading Research at Florida State University in Tallahassee. She was the club’s guest speaker at a tent talk on July 13.

For tent talks, which the club holds frequently over the course of the nine-week summer season, speakers and their audiences gather under a tent on the front lawn of the women’s club, on South Lake Drive in Chautauqua Institution.

Educators who focus on reading tend to be passionate about their subject. If they weren’t passionate, they wouldn’t be as good at their work as they otherwise are.
Foorman’s passion for the subject reveals that she loves what she does.

FSU researchers receive $1.5M grant to study corequisite developmental education models

Florida State University researchers have received a $1.5M grant from the Institute of Education Sciences — the independent, nonpartisan statistics, research and evaluation arm of the U.S. Department of Education — to study corequisite developmental education courses and their effect on students’ postsecondary outcomes.

This project responds to Texas House Bill (HB) 2223, which requires all public colleges to implement corequisite developmental education (DE), where underprepared students enroll in introductory math and English courses while receiving DE support.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics By The Numbers

...Outside of the usual suggestions (e.g., masks, washing hands), it is important to cough and sneeze into your elbow rather than hands. Also, consider what you touch. For example, when we wash our hands in a bathroom, we typically must touch a door handle to exit. Use a paper towel or tissue to open the door and avoid the chance of ruining the hygiene efforts you just made. Safety concerns will not be really different from any that we have here in the US.

Let’s stipulate, first, that no Olympic sport is easy. Relaxing, kicking back, lounging around—these are not activities that will lead you to the Olympic Village. If I was an Olympian, I’d probably take issue with some physically deteriorated internet writer telling me that softball’s a relative breeze. Which is fair. But—granted that every Olympic sport requires skills of agility and concentration lacking in most of us, and especially lacking in me—there are still, inevitably, degrees of difficulty. I chose the FSU College of Education because my interests were aligned with the faculty members in the program. The funding opportunities for graduate students such as assistantships, scholarships and awards were also a highlight for me. I was lucky to connect with two FSU alumni working as academicians back in Turkey. They shared their stories about how amazing and enriching their FSU experiences were.

My favorite part of the Foreign & Second Language Education program has been the challenge from our professors and support that I get in the program. I've also enjoyed the opportunity to work with my professors in research projects and teaching opportunities in the ESOL endorsement courses.

In my research, I designed an experimental study aiming to change international graduate students' fixed language mindsets to growth language mindsets. This way, their language speaking anxiety will diminish and their language enjoyment and language self-confidence will increase, resulting in improvement in language performance.

After graduation, I would like to continue teaching and conducting research on language anxiety, language self-confidence, language enjoyment, and language mindsets with the goal in mind to publish articles. I would like to design courses, training programs, and workshops for pre-service teachers, international teaching assistants and international students.
