Dear MFAs,

I have received your submissions through the form and your email replies. I have created an agenda regarding all the points to be presented to the faculty tomorrow morning. I have listed it below without going into too much detail on some of the issues and have left it anonymous. Once the meeting is over, I will email you all a brief of the meeting.

In order from most requested:

  1. LGBTQ+ Ally Training for the faculty:
“So we are all using the same language”
“No art faculty are listed as safe zones. I would love to see more faculty on this map along with signage posted on their offices.”
“I think it is also important to note that, I believe there are individuals among the faculty who are actively in need of this resource and a guide on how to discuss these things, who will not seek it out or participate without being required. However, the burden of educating the facilitators on their experiences should not rest solely on the shoulders of the marginalized students.”

  2. Visiting Artists:
“I was curious about the possibility of suggesting artists by cohorts this year. Is there still this option or not?”
“Can you ask about the visiting artists this semester and if we’ll get studio visits from outside artists?”

  3. Disability Sensitivity Training:
“I felt that a few of the events have severely favored the physically able (the come help and paint and you get first dibs on the spaces, the walking tour, etc). There was not something offered that would not have been too physically demanding so I did not participate at all. I have also been asked several times about my "not being around" and find it deeply insulting to have people basically insinuate that I am not correctly prioritizing my artwork.”

  4. Stolen Property at CAB:
“So far, we’ve learned that if something is stolen, nothing happens. How can faculty help us foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and solidarity with our fellow artists in the MFA and BFA programs? Maybe we need to have a social or something so everyone knows each other and would be less likely to get sticky fingers. I would like to know what the faculty suggests to help in this matter and what they can do to support.”

  5. Dirty Bathrooms at CAB:
“It's been more than a month that the floors and other parts have remained dirty. I know that there are a couple of people who clean the building, but they don't do much and pour just powder in them.”

Florida State University is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. I pay respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants, to the generations yet unborn, and to all Indigenous people. This land remains scarred by the histories and ongoing legacies of settler-colonial violence, dispossession, and removal. In spite of all of this, and with tremendous resilience, these Indigenous nations have remained deeply connected to this territory, to their families, to their communities, and to their cultural ways of life. I recognize the ongoing relationships of care that these Indigenous Nations maintain with this land and extend our gratitude as we live and work as humble and respectful guests upon their territory. I encourage you to learn about<https://native-land.ca/> and amplify the contemporary work<https://usdac.us/nativeland> of the Indigenous nations whose land you are on and to endeavor to support Indigenous sovereignty in all the ways that you can.

Subject: Faculty Meeting Friday 10/8

Hey all,

The time has come for Iris and me to share any concerns, requests, or comments you have with the faculty this Friday, 10/8, at 10 am. I have not received any submission to the online form, but I am also welcoming emails as well.
I know there was talk about bringing up LGBTQ+ Ally Workshop concerns to the faculty. If that is still something you would like to have addressed, please send me an email with an outline of what you would like me to present to them.
If there is anything else, please let me know. I am your bullhorn. Use me.
