DEPARTMENT OF ART ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance in studio art courses is mandatory due to the importance of hands-on experiences, visual learning, and group dynamics in the learning process. Active participation in the collaborative studio environment is crucial for acquiring knowledge and skills that cannot be replicated outside of the classroom. As such:

  *
Attendance is required as a significant portion of learning occurs through participation in class activities and receiving ongoing and in-person feedback from peers and the instructor.
  *
Students are expected to attend all class sessions and actively engage in learning activities.
  *
Students must inform their instructor via email in the case of an absence.

Unexcused Absences:

  *
For 3-credit classes, students may accumulate up to 3 unexcused absences without it affecting their final course grade. For 1-credit classes, up to 2 unexcused absences are permitted without penalty.
  *
Exceeding the permitted limit will result in a reduction of the final course grade by half a letter grade per additional absence.
  *
Seven or more absences will lead to an automatic course failure unless a medical or hardship withdrawal from FSU is sought and approved.

Tardiness Guidelines:

  *
Arriving late or leaving early equates to a tardy. Three tardies equate to an absence.
  *
Tardies exceeding 20 minutes may be considered an absence at the instructor’s discretion.
  *
Students arriving late are responsible for ensuring their attendance is recorded by discussing it with the instructor directly after class.

Excused Absences:

  *
Absences excused or pre-approved by the University, College, Department, or Dean of Students will be honored with proper documentation provided within a week of return to class. However, all missed work must be made up and submitted as required.

  *
If you feel you have extenuating circumstances, please make an appointment to discuss your options with the instructor.

Students dealing with health concerns affecting attendance or course performance can contact Case Management Services for assistance. They are also encouraged to reach out to their instructors to explore ways to meet course outcomes.
