James earned her MFA from Yale University and her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. James has had solo shows in New York, NY at Larissa Goldston Gallery and in Milwaukee, WI at Tory Folliard Gallery. She shows her work internationally and has participated in numerous residencies in Canada, Italy, England, Norway and the US. She was awarded artist-in-residence fellowships at The American Academy of Rome, Arts in the Park at Quetico Provincial Park, Sharpe Walentas Studio Program in Brooklyn, NY, The Stowe School in England, and the Vermont Studio Center. For the past seventeen years, Breehan James's paintings have documented her annual visits to her family cottage in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and exploring the Boundary Waters Wilderness of Minnesota while canoe camping and painting. The work is both a portrait of place as well as a record of timekeeping. Her studio practice extends works made "out in the field" to her studio. James has taught at Boston University as an Assistant Professor since 2015.
