Dear Department of Art,
You are invited to explore the work of FSU's graduating art students and support their exceptional artistic achievement. There is probably no happier show in any artist’s career than a celebratory exit show. The Department is proud to share the openings of the MFA and BFA thesis exhibitions, and HSF Excellence in the Visual Arts Exhibition Awards reception this Friday. Please mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:

Thursday, April 13, Opening Nights at FSU, Chain of Parks Art Festival Presenting Artist John Ensor Parker, Student Lecture Event, Jim Moran Building, 111 S. Monroe Street, 10am

John Ensor Parker is a Brooklyn, New York, and Cagliari, Italy-based inter-media artist and curator working in painting, drawing, interactive design, lighting, video, sound and large-scale projection mapping. He has created large-scale public art installations at The New Museum, The Manhattan Bridge, Wyly Theatre, AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and The Yards in Washington D.C., among others. Parker’s Mechanical Engineering degree from FAMU-FSU College of Engineering provided the foundation for his journey with art. Parker will discuss “Art & Science” and how both are one in the same.

Friday, April 14, Excellence in the Visual Arts Exhibition Awards reception, Honors, Scholars, and Fellows House, 3-5pm

Please join us for the Excellence in the Visual Arts Exhibition Awards at the FSU Honors, Scholars, and Fellows (HSF) House this Friday, April 14 from 3 -5 pm. There will be an event reception. Several Studio Art undergrad and grad students are included, please come out and support them.

To view the artwork and vote on your favorite submission, visit https://hsf.fsu.edu/art-awards. The People’s choice recipient also receives recognition at the event on Friday. The voting will close at 3:30 pm on Friday.

The Excellence in Visual Arts Exhibition Awards are given to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students for work of exceptional artistic achievement. Selected works will be exhibited in the HSF for one year (March 2023 – March 2024).

The Department of Art invites you to the opening reception of the BFA Thesis Exhibition at Working Method Contemporary and Phyllis Straus Gallery in the Carnaghi Arts Building at 2214 Belle Vue Way. In Spite Of features art by 10 graduating BFA students who engage a variety of media to create work that is at once personal, provocative, and resonant. The use of media ranges from painting and drawing, to photography, book arts, and printmaking, to site-specific intervention, sculpture, ceramics, and installation. And the themes engaged through these students’ work are just as vast, and include the death of memory, the need for acceptance, comfort objects, childhood trauma, class disparity, the perception of time, repetition in cycles of thinking and behavior, and the untainted wonder of youth.

In Spite Of, as the exhibition’s title, engages the viewer to reflect on what centers these disparate bodies of work, which is an enduring determination – a resilience that derives from the students’ use of their art as a means to focus attention on the challenging subjects their work addresses.

In addition to exhibiting in the two galleries at the Carnaghi Arts Building, the students are installing an art fair booth in its Atrium Gallery, where their work will be available for purchase.

The Florida State University Department of Art is pleased to announce be/longing, an exhibition of works by Florida State University's 2023 MFA graduating class Jenae Christopher, AnnaBrooke Greene, Camille Modesto, nik rye, Chayse Sampy, and Chansong Woo. Hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts, the exhibition will focus on their shared considerations of being in the state of longing regarding the diaspora, community and home. Christopher, Greene, Modesto, rye, Sampy, and Woo share multimedia practices that provide forms of documentation of lived experiences, past and present. Through participatory performance, video projection, painting, and various multimedia projects, these artists explore the nuances of space, place, and personhood while considering both collective and personal memory. By enacting gestures that take into account the placement and shifting of perception, the artists put forward an expression and vision of hope. Based on their individual, personal experiences, they expand upon various modes of participation to create an intimate space for visitor engagement in order for new modes of encounters to occur all while envisioning an aspiration for tomorrow.

Saturday, April 15, Echolocation (Karaoke Protest Party), FSU Museum of Fine Arts, 7-9pm

Interdisciplinary artist and activist, nik rye, will be hosting a participatory performance, Echolocation (Karaoke Protest Party), in which participants will be encouraged to sing popular songs related to protest and change in a communal act of joy as resistance. Some refreshments will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring more (no alcohol). The participatory performance will last approximately from 7 to 9 pm.
