From: Lilian Garcia Roig <lgarciaroig at fsu.edu>

There have been come anonymous complaints filed against the college about signs with mask requirements on some faculty offices.
Although the Art department is not specifically mentioned, I want to send a "reminder" email to faculty regarding any signs they might have on their offices-
I know we are compliant with our classes and labs but this would pertain to office hour type of meetings.

The "Masks expected " signs are fine and individual faculty can even say I prefer that you were a mask in my office.
However, if the guest/student is unwilling to do so, or is made uncomfortable by the question,
the faculty member must offer an alternative meeting place or mode. (such as meeting outdoors or by Zoom- ideally this info should have been provided on the syllabus- but can be added if not there)
We cannot require masking.

**You may address any concerns you may have with Tori Cole.

Thank you all for doing what we can within what we are legally required to do.
Best,

Lilian Garcia-Roig

Subject: IMPORTANT: Complaint
Dear Chairs of Relevant Departments,

Please see the following excerpt from a communication I received from upper administration.

An anonymous report to the Inspector General's Office complained that signs on faculty offices in the William Johnston Building (most of whom are faculty in your college) say that masks are required. That office confirmed that signs "requiring" masks were on a number of faculty office doors (most of which are faculty in your college). I suspect these are old signs from a time when the university was permitted to require face coverings. It is fine to expect, encourage and recommend wearing face coverings but not require them.

I ask that you enlist staff to make the necessary changes and inform faculty members about the reason for the change. As a reminder, individual faculty can say I prefer that you were a mask in my office. However, if the guest is unwilling to do so, or is made uncomfortable by the question, the faculty member must offer an alternative meeting place or mode. We cannot require masking.

Best regards,
James
