The overall goal of our laboratory is supporting successful aging through research in healthcare technologies; design for aging; technology acceptance; human-automation interaction; aging-in-place; human-robot interaction; cognitive aging; aging with disabilities; skill acquisition; and training.

This position is funded by a research grant from the National Institutes of Health through the National Institute of Nursing Research.  The grant is entitled Improving Hypertension Medication Adherence for Older Adults [R01NR018469] and is a joint initiative of the University of Arizona and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.  The project is focused on the development and testing of MEDSReM-2: Medication Education, Decision Support, Reminding, and Monitoring. MEDSReM-2 is a digital therapeutic technology system to support self-management of hypertension, serving as a partner – providing education, coaching, feedback, reminding, and monitoring for prescribed antihypertensive medications and blood pressure (BP).  MEDSREM-2 is a theory-based, technology-enhanced comprehensive self-management system that supports hypertension medication adherence and BP management for non-adherent older adults. We will test the efficacy of MEDSReM-2 in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) for older adults with hypertension to assess medication adherence, BP, perceived competence and autonomy, and mobile device proficiency.

This position is for one year, initially, but renewable for up to three years.  The postdoc will be the Illinois site lead for the RCT and be engaged in all aspects of the research including recruitment; supervision of staff; coordination of enrollment; data collection; analysis; and preparing materials for presentations and publications.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have an earned doctorate in an affiliated discipline such as gerontology, health, nursing, pharmacy, human factors, psychology, public health, or other health-related field.  Candidates must have experience conducting research with human participants, specific experience with older adults preferred.  Strong communication skills – spoken and written – are critical, and should be evidenced by publications and presentations.  Organizational and interpersonal skills are very important for this position as the candidate will be the lead on a cross-site, interdisciplinary RCT.  Experience mentoring undergraduates and junior graduate students is a plus.
