Department of Art's 2023/24 Visiting Artist Series

Thursday, January 18, 6pm Visiting Artist Lecture with Amina Ross in FAB 249

Join the FSU Department of Art<https://art.fsu.edu/> for the third and final lecture of the 2023-2024 Visiting Artist Series! For this year’s academic programming, FSU Art invites guests whose creative work and research connect with a broadly defined theme of “listening.”

We are excited and honored to welcome guest speaker Amina Ross<https://aminaross.info/> on Thursday, January 18th at 6 PM in Fine Arts Building (FAB) 249.

About Amina Ross

Ross makes videos, sculptures, sounds, and situations. Their creative practice is characterized by a commitment to fragmented narratives, free-association, and the multiplicity of meaning within the interplay of images, words, sounds and signs. Drawing inspiration from the nuanced nature of language, Ross often uses language that carries double meanings, inviting viewers to explore layers of interpretation.

Their artistic endeavors exist within a dynamic intersection of video art and sculpture, serving as a platform to explore themes of feeling, embodied knowledge, and intimacy as vital survival technologies, particularly for Black, queer, trans, and feminine-spectrum individuals. In the realm of video art and sculpture, Ross's work transcends conventional storytelling, they harness the evocative power of words and imagery to conjure deep-seated emotions and sensations. At the heart of Ross's creative inquiry lies an exploration of how systems of power shape our perception of reality.

Ross’s work has been recently exhibited at the Hessel Museum of Art (Hudson, NY), the Tang Teaching Museum (Saratoga Springs, NY), Sentiment (Zurich, CH), Wave Hill (Bronx, NY), The Luminary (St. Louis, MO), Iceberg Projects (Chicago, IL), M23 (New York, NY) and Centro De Cultura Digital (Mexico City, MX) among other venues. In the summer of 2023 they were a featured artist at the 68th annual Flaherty Film Seminar: Queer World Mending.

Sam McCoy and Chris Rivera: En Plein Air
Gadsden Arts Center & Museum<https://gadsdenarts.org/>
13 N. Madison Street
Quincy, FL

Reception: Saturday, January 20, 2024, 5–7pm at Gadsden Arts
Exhibition runs: December 16, 2023 – March 23, 2024

Sam McCoy and Christopher Rivera explore Southern landscapes in this series of plein-air paintings. Each has taken a different approach while painting from scenes that they observe. Drawing inspiration from lush Florida’s landscapes, McCoy attempts to communicate the many complexities of the state’s tourist culture. Conversely, Rivera explores the connection between on-screen media and popular culture, using found video and imagery to inspire hyper-realistic landscape paintings. Through their art, the artists aim to encourage viewers to ponder their own relationships with nature.

Both McCoy and Rivera graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BFA in 2018 and an MFA from Florida State University in 2021. McCoy is currently the Artist Programs Manager at Thomasville Center for the Arts in Thomasville, GA. Rivera is the Sculpture Lab Studio Manager and Studio Art Adjunct at Florida State University.
