We are a free clinic at Valdosta State University and operate strictly on donations.  Each semester each family has an opportunity to donate any amount to the clinic at the end of the semester. Some people give large amounts while others give nothing, but it all works out. We have recently partnered with the Scottish Rite Foundation and they are offering funding for special projects. They gave us a large donation for a literacy project for screening all kindergarten children in the Valdosta City School Systems. Two of our professors on the faculty wrote a grant that was funded by the Scottish Rite Foundation of Georgia. Other funding/donations have come from the Valdosta Junior Service League and the Quota Club of Valdosta. In addition, NSSLHA fundraisers and our yearly conference brings in some revenue from the VSU Foundation.  The VSU Speech and Hearing Clinic is listed as a facility where faculty members can donate to through the VSU Foundation so we receive funds from there as well. I hope that these examples of extra funding sources are helpful to other clinics.

This idea came up at the CAPCSD conference; a clinic director (I don’t remember which school) said that her legal team told her that it was okay to charge a registration fee as long as it only covers materials/consumables.  I thought this was very interesting, considering a lot of us have decided to be a free clinic following the Medicare provider issue.   I have asked our university counsel’s office to look into it – it might be a nice way to get some revenue / “buy-in” to avoid some attendance issues.    I’ll update when I get a response.
