Happy New Year to all!  And already, what a year we begin...  So much change.  So much pain.  But also, so many reasons for hope!

Here at FSU Law, we hope you are faring as well as possible, and we invite you to join us for some inspiring environmental events this spring.

We begin next Wed., Jan. 27, with a program on Rooftop Solar Energy in Florida, led by experts from both industry and advocacy.  Then, please join us for our Spring 2021 Distinguished Lecture on "The New Urban Commons" with Professor Sheila Foster of Georgetown University (Feb. 24).  We also invite you to two important programs on climate change: one a climate science presentation from Florida's state climatologist, David Zierden (Feb. 10th), and the other with Bob Inglis on why conservatives are positioned to lead on climate (March 10th). Florida is a state with abundant solar resources. Rooftop solar energy has the potential to transform the provision and delivery of electricity. However, existing state law presents several obstacles to the widespread adoption of rooftop solar energy by residences, commercial properties, and industrial facilities. The 2021 Energy Law Panel will discuss the various economic opportunities for adopting rooftop solar energy, and legal reforms to facilitate its expansion.

The concept of urban commons is based on the idea that public spaces, urban land, and infrastructure ought to be accessible to, and able to be utilized by, urban communities to produce and support a range of goods and services important for the sustainability of those populations, especially the vulnerable. In this lecture, Sheila Foster will discuss her research on the urban and commons and the idea of the city as a commons. The lecture will link the urban commons, conceptually and practically, to solutions that respond to enduring and systemic racism.
