Positions: 1

Students are assigned to serve as an extern law clerk for an administrative law judge who primarily handles environmental cases at the Division of Administrative Hearings. Duties include legal research, drafting memoranda, and preparing orders. Students have an opportunity to improve their research, writing and analytical skills, and to gain an understanding of the jurisdiction and procedures of the Division of Administrative Hearings. Students gain exposure to substantive environmental law.

Prerequisites: Evidence, Administrative Law or Florida Administrative Practice. Students are not certified under the Student Practice Rule.

Recommended Courses: Administrative Law or Florida Administrative Practice.

Selection Process: The selection process is handled jointly by the faculty supervisor and participating judges. Selection is based on a student applicant's grades, career goals, and demonstrated ability in research and writing.


LEON COUNTY ATTORNEY

Positions: 1-2

Students assist in representing Leon County in a variety of civil and administrative cases filed against, or, on behalf of, the county and its officials. Types of cases range from animal control actions to zoning disputes, Comprehensive Plan amendments, challenges to personnel actions and mortgage foreclosure hearings, as well as proceedings before the Code Enforcement Board and Contractor's Licensing Board. Students conduct research, draft pleadings, assist with training, and may be involved in aspects of pre-trial preparation, including witness interviews, interrogatories and requests for admissions, depositions and exhibit preparation. Students may attend Board of County Commission meetings, which begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Prerequisites: Evidence and Civil Pretrial Practice are prerequisites for the 6-credit program.  Students in the 6-credit program who have their Bar clearance have the option to be certified.  There are no prerequisites for the 4-credit program.

Recommended Courses: Local Government Law, Evidence, Civil Pretrial Practice, Land Use Regulation.

Selection Process: Preference will be given to students who apply for the 6-credit program.
