Dear students interested in Environmental, Land Use, Natural Resources, and
Energy Law,

 

I hope that this e-mail finds you well. As you have likely heard in the
news, U.S. oil and gas companies (and oil and gas companies in many other
countries) are currently experiencing massive economic difficulties due to a
combination of the Russian-Saudi oil price wars and COVID-19. Although the
United States is the world's largest producer of oil, other big producers
like Russia and Saudi Arabia have been pumping out huge quantities of oil,
causing supply to increase and prices to drop. Even with the recent
agreement reached to cut production, COVID-19, which has caused oil
consumption to substantially drop as billions of people comply with
lock-down orders, will continue to have an impact on oil prices. Low oil
prices mean that U.S companies can't break even-the cost of drilling and
hydraulically fracturing a well exceeds the amount of money they can make by
selling oil.  Many of these companies were already struggling before these
crisis, in part because there has been a glut of natural gas production
because many oil wells produce substantial amounts of natural gas. This glut
has also caused natural gas prices to drop.
