From hwiseman at fsu.edu Tue Sep 3 13:07:53 2019 From: hwiseman at fsu.edu (Hannah Wiseman) Date: Tue, 3 Sep 2019 17:07:53 +0000 Subject: [Law-envtlcert] September job and internship application deadlines; other upcoming job-related deadlines Message-ID: Dear Environmental Certificate students and other students interested in environmental, energy, land use, and natural resources law, This e-mail is a quick reminder that some deadlines for applying for federal jobs and internships are fast approaching. For 3Ls, applications for the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) Honors Program are due on Sunday, September 8, at 11:59 PM. For 2Ls, applications for a spring 2020 clerkship with the DOJ ENRD are now open (they have been open since August 1), and the window for applying closes after September 25. (In other words, the deadline for applying is September 25.) The agency does not specify the timing of the deadline, so you should perhaps assume that it is 5 PM eastern on September 25 just to be safe. 1Ls-stay tuned. You may apply for a summer 2020 clerkship with DOJ ENRD starting on December 1, 2019. 3Ls, also keep your eye on Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) application deadlines. The tentative application window for this program is scheduled to open at noon on October 3, 2019, and to close at noon on October 17, 2019. This program helps multiple federal agencies, including environmental and natural resources agencies such as the Department of the Interior-recruit students who are just graduating. The application process is a rigorous and multi-step process, so please keep a close eye on the deadlines if you are interested. Essentially, once you are selected as a PMF or a PMF finalist, multiple federal agencies might consider hiring you. Ms. Alderman has a long and distinguished career in environmental and land use law, and she will discuss her career path. This will be a great opportunity for you to see the types of jobs that you might consider pursuing and the types of issues that you might work on after you graduate. This is also an event that counts toward the enrichment requirement of the Environmental Certificate program. You do not have to be a certificate student to attend. Free lunch from Zoe's Kitchen will be served. Please RSVP to jwalsh at law.fsu.edu before Monday, September 16. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses nuclear power plants and regulates their safety. It also regulates the commercial use of radioactive materials, such as in hospitals. Also, although it appears that the deadline for the Honors Program for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission passed over the summer, there is a brief statement on FERC's website suggesting that they are looking for attorneys, including students who are currently pursuing a JD. FERC regulates most aspects of wholesale electricity as well as the siting and construction of interstate natural gas pipelines. Additionally, the Office of Public Counsel-a state office in Tallahassee that represents consumer interests in utility ratemaking proceedings (electric utilities and other utilities)-is looking for an entry-level attorney. Please send a cover letter and your resume to Mr. J.R. Kelly, Public Counsel, if you are interested. Competitions-Remember that it can never hurt to try. Even if you do not win, just participating in competitions is a great experience to put on your resume, and in the case of the Florida Air & Waste Management Association, it is a great networking opportunity. Some competitions also offer cash prizes. Now is the time to think about entering a competition at the Florida Air & Waste Management Association's conference on October 28 and 29 in Tallahassee. This Association is a large group of environmental professionals, including lawyers, and at the Association's annual conference they offer student competitions. You apply ahead of time to enter the competition and then attend the conference on October 29 to participate in the competition. Participating in a poster competition-in which you prepare and present a poster on a current topic of environmental interest-is a great opportunity for you to connect with professionals. All that you need to do to apply for the poster competition is submit a 300-word (or fewer words) abstract to the contact in this bulletin. Students can also form teams to participate in an environmental problem solving competition. The challenge this year is to propose sea level rise resiliency tools for a rural coastal community in Florida-a perfect challenge for environmental law students. And if you manage to team up with students from FSU Engineering, this would create an even stronger team. As with the posters, this is a great opportunity for you to practice presenting in front of a group of professionals and to get to know potential future employers. Proposals for posters and team competition entry are due at midnight on October 7, 2019. Poster presentations and team presentations will be on October 29, 2019, at the Turnbull Conference Center just down the road from the law school. Note that there will also be a student-mentor breakfast at the Florida Air & Waste Management Association conference, at which students will "get paired with an experienced professional to spend 45 minutes enjoying breakfast, sharing experiences and networking." Registration for the conference is here. If you want to attend for free, just volunteer for the conference. When you register online, select the "volunteer" option. Finally, for students who are writing papers for seminars or other purposes, please keep in mind a rich array of environmental student writing competitions listed in the attached document, which was helpfully prepared by Katie Miller of the FSU Law Research Center. You can win money for a winning entry in some of the competitions, and sometimes winning or being a runner up means that you can publish your paper or present it in front of a group of professionals. It can't hurt to try! Note that many deadlines are in April or May, but some are as early as December. I just spoke with one of our recent graduates working in Washington, DC, and she mentioned that agencies hiring for more permanent attorney positions seem to be hiring people who previously clerked for those agencies while they were in law school. In other words, if you want to work in Washington after your graduate, it might boost your chances of getting a job there if you intern or extern there during law school. Also remember that you can apply for internships and externships in regional offices of federal agencies around the United States, such as the regional offices of the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Professor Will Butler from FSU's Department of Urban and Regional Planning will talk about the mandate to plan for sea level rise in Florida and the challenges of implementing this mandate. Food that is better than pizza will be served! (At the last event we have food from Zoe's Kitchen.) Please RSVP to Jennifer Walsh, jwalsh at law.fsu.edu. Also, speaking of sea level rise, two students have volunteered to form a team for the Environmental Challenge-a student competition at the meeting of the Florida section of the Air & Waste Management Association. The competition asks students to propose resiliency tools for a rural (<2,500 population) community in Florida that is struggling to address sea level rise issues. Proposals are due by October 7, so now is the time to form teams. Please e-mail me if you are interested in participating in this challenge. It should not require a huge amount of time-the proposal is a maximum of 8 pages-and it's a great opportunity to meet professionals who might eventually hire you.
