What is this talk about?

Healthy aging is accompanied by changes in how large-scale brain networks are organized. Networks that are relatively distinct and specialized in younger adulthood can become less differentiated with age, including brain systems that support episodic memory.

In this talk, Dr. Hermiller will discuss her work examining whether noninvasive brain stimulation can be used to modify these age-vulnerable memory networks. In particular, she will focus on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) approaches that target hippocampal–cortical brain networks and ask whether stimulation can increase network specificity, alter functional connectivity, and ultimately support memory.

She will also discuss ongoing work aimed at understanding when age-related dedifferentiation reflects a source of memory decline, and when it may instead reflect adaptive changes in how the aging brain supports cognition.

Speaker Bio

Molly S. Hermiller, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Program in Neuroscience at Florida State University, where she directs the Hermiller Memory & Modulation Lab. Her research examines the neural mechanisms supporting episodic memory, with a particular focus on interactions between the hippocampus and distributed cortical networks. Her lab combines functional MRI, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and behavioral approaches to understand how memory networks are organized, how they change across adulthood, and whether they can be causally modified through noninvasive brain stimulation.

We look forward to seeing you there!

All the best,
