From isl at fsu.edu Tue Oct 6 16:29:09 2026 From: isl at fsu.edu (Institute for Successful Longevity) Date: Tue, 6 Oct 2026 20:29:09 +0000 Subject: [Isl] ISL Monthly Newsletter September 2026 and Upcoming Events Message-ID: Dear ISL affiliates and friends, Hope you?re having a pleasant week so far! We are happy to share the latest edition of the FSU Institute for Successful Longevity Monthly Newsletter ISL Highlights September 2026 (Vol. 23) (Online Version), and to highlight some of our upcoming free events. Upcoming Events: ISL Brown Bag Talk by Dr. Mark Issac at 12 PM on October 19: "When Irrelevant Information Changes Our Minds: Lessons from the Monty Hall Problem" Date/Time: October 19, 2026, 12:00 PM Venue: Virtual Only-Zoom Overview: Why do people sometimes change their decisions when they receive information that should not matter? And can we teach people to make better decisions under uncertainty? Using the classic Monty Hall problem, this study examines how people interpret probabilities, respond to new information, and learn from experience. We introduce an experimental setting in which the best choice is relatively intuitive, but participants are subsequently given additional information that should have no effect on that choice. We find that while making probabilities more intuitive can substantially improve decision-making, some people are still influenced by irrelevant information, and improvements do not necessarily transfer to other decision contexts. The findings raise broader questions about how people learn to reason under uncertainty?and whether they learn underlying principles or simply adopt rules of thumb. Zoom Registration: Click HERE to register for the event ISL Brown Bag Talk by Dr. Molly Hermiller at 12 PM on November 3: ?Stimulating Age-Related Dedifferentiation in Memory Networks" Date/Time: October 19, 2026, 12:00 PM Venue: Hybrid-Innovation Hub, Room 112 and Zoom Overview: Healthy aging is accompanied by changes in how large-scale brain networks are organized. Networks that are relatively distinct and specialized in younger adulthood can become less differentiated with age, including brain systems that support episodic memory. In this talk, I will discuss our work examining whether noninvasive brain stimulation can be used to modify these age-vulnerable memory networks. In particular, I will focus on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) approaches that target hippocampal?cortical brain networks and ask whether stimulation can increase network specificity, alter functional connectivity, and ultimately support memory. I will also discuss ongoing work aimed at understanding when age-related dedifferentiation reflects a source of memory decline, and when it may instead reflect adaptive changes in how the aging brain supports cognition. Zoom Registration: Click HERE to register for the event AI + Aging Distinguished Lecture with Dr. Yanshan Wang at 10 AM on October 26th: Healthy Aging in the Era of Generative AI: For Scientific Advances to Trustworthy Clinical Applications Date/Time: October 19, 2026, 12:00 PM Venue: In-Person - Broad Auditorium, FSU Claude Pepper Center Overview: In this lecture, Dr. Wang will discuss advances in generative AI and how these technologies can be translated into trustworthy, human-centered clinical applications that support healthy aging, functional independence, and quality of life.
