From isl at fsu.edu Mon Mar 3 09:40:27 2025 From: isl at fsu.edu (Institute for Successful Longevity) Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2025 14:40:27 +0000 Subject: [Isl] ISL Brown Bag Series Lecture Featuring Dr. Anne Barrett Message-ID: Good morning! Today is the last day to RSVP in person for Dr. Anne Barrett's lecture for the ISL Brown Bag Series on March 5th at 12 PM. The talk will feature Doctoral students Hope Mimbs and Brianna Soulie. Thank you! Title: "Frailty in the Margins: How U.S. Policies on Aging and Technology Depict Deep Old Age" Abstract: Technology is often viewed as having the potential to revolutionize the experience of aging for individuals and societies ? an optimism propelled by the rapid appearance of numerous, diverse technologies. These include ?low-tech? products, like large button phones and motorized chair lifts, as well as ?high-tech? digital ones, like surveillance tags, companion robots, and AI virtual assistants. Although concerns about the technological shift have been raised, often centering on issues of privacy and security, less attention has been paid to the discourse around technology found in aging policies. Of the handful of such studies, none focus on how aging policies depict frailty. Our project analyzes depictions of frailty in documents published by key institutional players in U.S. age tech policy (e.g., Office of Science and Technology Policy; Department of Health and Human Services). The results of our content analysis illustrate how constructions of later life that minimize discussion of frailty can infuse aging and technology policies, potentially limiting the care available to those most in need of it. Bio: Anne Barrett is a professor of sociology and the Mildred and Claude Pepper Eminent Scholar at FSU. Her research examines two themes: how social relationships affect health over the life course and how ageism manifests and influences well-being in middle and later life. Hope Mimbs is a doctoral student in sociology at FSU. Her research interests focus on how social relationships, especially friendships, affect health and well-being over the life course. Brianna Soulie is a doctoral student in sociology at FSU. Her research interests center on how gender shapes embodied experiences of aging. To RSVP in-person, use the link below. Yesterday, FSU made the formal announcement of my appointment as Director of our Institute. I am deeply honored to step into this important role and to continue building on the incredible foundation of research, collaboration, and community engagement that defines ISL. I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for your support?your dedication to advancing aging research and improving the lives of older adults makes ISL the dynamic and impactful institute it is today. Over the past several months as Interim Director, I?ve had the privilege of working closely with many of you to launch new initiatives, including our three research working groups?Advanced Technology, Basic Science, and Clinical Research?to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration. We have also expanded ISL?s public engagement efforts, reinforcing our commitment to bringing aging research beyond the lab and into the community. Once again, I would like to thank my predecessor and long-time mentor, Dr. Neil Charness, for his unwavering support and huge help for the smooth transition! I am also pleased to share that I have been promoted to Full Professor, a milestone that reflects not only my own academic journey but also the support and collaboration I have received from colleagues across ISL and beyond. This recognition strengthens my commitment to expanding ISL?s research impact, strengthening partnerships, and supporting our students and faculty in developing innovative solutions for longevity and aging challenges. With advances in data science, AI, and digital health, we are at a transformative moment in aging research. I am confident that, together, we can push the boundaries of discovery and application to improve health and well-being for older adults! Our 2025-2026 Cycle Planning Grant will be due on March 23, please visit this webpage for details: https://isl.fsu.edu/article/isl-planning-grant-submission-2025-2026 Yesterday, we held our Student Poster Day event at Claude Pepper Center, with our guest keynote Dr. Rui Zhang from University of Minnesota, our beloved Provost Jim Clark, and more importantly, 15 amazing student presenters from many different colleges and departments across campus. We are happy to announce that the winners of this year?s Student Poster Awards went to Cole Patoine, PhD Candidate from Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences (First Place), Steven Medarev, PhD Candidate from Department of Biomedical Science (Second Place), and Victoria Valko, an undergraduate student from School of Information (Third Place)! Congratulations to these amazing students and their advisors! Many thanks to the three judges Drs. Lynn Panton, Ravider Nagpal, and Zilong Xie for their meticulous work and insightful feedback! I?d like to also congratulate Steven Medarev on winning this year?s Esther & Del Grosser Scholarship, with $1,000 award to support his doctoral research. As a PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at FSU?s College of Medicine, Steven is studying a key protein called adiponectin, which helps protect blood vessels. As people age, their levels of this protein decrease, which can lead to problems with blood flow and a higher risk of heart disease. His research focuses on understanding how this happens and exploring ways to prevent or slow down these changes. By identifying new strategies to keep blood vessels healthy as we age, his work supports the Institute for Successful Longevity?s mission to promote healthier aging and improve quality of life for older adults! Thank you, Drs. Juliann Cortese, Terra Bradley, and Sladjana Lukic for the evaluation of the application materials of this year?s Esther & Del Grosser scholarship! You can find our upcoming events here: https://isl.fsu.edu/upcoming-events. I look forward to collaborating with you all and welcome your thoughts and ideas as we shape the future of ISL. Thank you for your ongoing commitment, and I hope to see many of you at our upcoming events and initiatives! These events include weather-related disasters, such as severe storms, and the complexities of preparedness and response when a disaster disables critical infrastructure, exposing older adults to the effects of the event, plus the effects of heat and food- and water-borne diseases. Manuscripts may also address larger issues , such as the threat to older adults amid population displacement due to severe drought or when an earthquake hits an area largely populated by migrants and/or refugees, as well as the demand that hyper-complex emergencies place on first responders and the relief community. Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Dear ISL faculty affiliates and JAB members, I?m excited to share that with the help of our newly appointed Outreach Assistant, Victoria Valko, our Admin Assistant Nehja, and Web Master Dhruv, we have revamped ISL?s social media presence and launched a refreshed media strategy to better showcase the important work happening across ISL. You can now find us across all major platforms?Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, X (Twitter), and, of course, our ISL website. All of these can be easily accessed via our Linktree: ? https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flinktr.ee%2Ffsuisl&data=05%7C02%7Cslukic%40fsu.edu%7Cbf29e4c9c03942cc213308dd6c77bca8%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638785983718770754%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=cyIs02mAjWxdM6UFCOG4y5a4%2BtCETz06v%2BCdq4Ffw2M%3D&reserved=0 We?ll be regularly sharing updates on ISL events, programs, research highlights, and featured affiliates. This is a critical time for aging research, and I?ve come to realize that, as academics, we haven?t done enough to tell our stories and let our peers and the general public know about the incredible work being done here. We plan to use these social media sites with an industry-leading social media campaign strategy to communicate what we do at ISL to the world. This will significantly increase our visibility, which will help us garner more support and recognition. Soon, we will be reaching out to you about your great work that should be featured by ISL. This could include featured stories, featured videos, etc. If you have any news about your research, please feel free to share it using this Qualtrics link: https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffsu.qualtrics.com%2Fjfe%2Fform%2FSV_6GpBYeM0WBWjmxE&data=05%7C02%7Cslukic%40fsu.edu%7Cbf29e4c9c03942cc213308dd6c77bca8%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638785983718816731%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=xWOV9XbMhv6AVfy9eYOxqzqbeA1p3jjzGZZgKzQ08wQ%3D&reserved=0, which can be found on the news page of our ISL website (https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fisl.fsu.edu%2Fnews&data=05%7C02%7Cslukic%40fsu.edu%7Cbf29e4c9c03942cc213308dd6c77bca8%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638785983718857082%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=oi9Mqit3Pxfe94z6PCQuYbrHii4pP6WG5m1tjMl2LHU%3D&reserved=0>). We would like these blurbs to be easily understandable by the general public so please avoid any jargons if possible. We will start a new round of campaign for ISL Volunteer Registry. In the past 10 years, ISL registry has been used in more than 100 research studies across our campus. We?d really like it to keep it up to date and potentially expand to younger people (e.g., 50+). Having our social media presence would really help us get more volunteers in the community to sign up for the registry and participate in research studies here at FSU. If you have ever used ISL registry, we hope you will share your stories and what you found in these studies and we can help you communicate these to our aging community for real-world impact. That?s where you come in?please follow our accounts and share our posts with your professional networks. Together, we can raise awareness of the real-world impact of aging research at FSU and highlight the contributions of our outstanding faculty, students, and collaborators. Thank you for helping us amplify our message and promote successful longevity far beyond the lab!
