We will be serving a light lunch for those attending in person. Title: "Heritability: a counterfactual perspective" Abstract: Nature versus nurture is fundamental in behavioral, biological, and medical sciences. Central to it is the concept of heritability, a quantity that measures how much genes contribute to complex human traits. The "missing heritability problem? is a great scientific puzzle identified by the Human Genome Project: there is a substantial gap between heritability estimates from population-based cohorts and those from twin data. Up to now, there is no widely accepted solution to this dilemma and our theoretical understanding of the problem is still limited. Inspired by the twin design, we define heritability by contrasting the factual value of the trait with its counterfactual value under the same environmental exposure and an ?independent draw? of genetic variants. This new notion offers a more nuanced understanding of the genetic and environmental contributions and their interactions. A particularly interesting feature is that, without strong untestable assumptions, we can only obtain bounds (but not precise estimates) of counterfactual heritability. We provide conditions for partial identification of this new notion with and without covariates in completely randomized experiments. In addition, we compare it with commonly used definitions of heritability in genetics through simulation studies. Our analysis sheds light on the important missing heritability problem. Bio: Hongyuan Cao is a professor of statistics at Florida State University. She got her PhD in statistics from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her research interests include causal inference, genetics, reinforcement learning, SMART trial, survival analysis and their applications in public health, medicine and social science. She is an elected fellow of American Statistical Association. To RSVP for in-person, use the link below. We will be serving a light lunch for those attending in person. Title: "Frailty in the Margins: How U.S. Policies on Aging and Technology Depict Deep Old Age" Abstract: Technology is often viewed as having the potential to revolutionize the experience of aging for individuals and societies ? an optimism propelled by the rapid appearance of numerous, diverse technologies. These include ?low-tech? products, like large button phones and motorized chair lifts, as well as ?high-tech? digital ones, like surveillance tags, companion robots, and AI virtual assistants. Although concerns about the technological shift have been raised, often centering on issues of privacy and security, less attention has been paid to the discourse around technology found in aging policies. Of the handful of such studies, none focus on how aging policies depict frailty. Our project analyzes depictions of frailty in documents published by key institutional players in U.S. age tech policy (e.g., Office of Science and Technology Policy; Department of Health and Human Services). The results of our content analysis illustrate how constructions of later life that minimize discussion of frailty can infuse aging and technology policies, potentially limiting the care available to those most in need of it. Bio: Anne Barrett is a professor of sociology and the Mildred and Claude Pepper Eminent Scholar at FSU. Her research examines two themes: how social relationships affect health over the life course and how ageism manifests and influences well-being in middle and later life. Hope Mimbs is a doctoral student in sociology at FSU. Her research interests focus on how social relationships, especially friendships, affect health and well-being over the life course. Brianna Soulie is a doctoral student in sociology at FSU. Her research interests center on how gender shapes embodied experiences of aging. To RSVP in-person, use the link below. PLEASE encourage your students to participate in this event by registering the poster information as early as possible but no later than 5 PM February 28 (Registration link: https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6y5UkExfeAwbj8i). We have limited capacity so we may have to select those which are (1) submitted early, and (2) better aligned with ISL mission and scope. I?d like to give a loud shout out to our amazing Provost Office for figuring out a funding model to make this expansion happen! We are also looking for three faculty affiliates as judges for this event. If you are interested in serving as a judge, please let me know as soon as possible. I look forward to working with you to develop the rubric for the judging and make sure the evaluation process is as fair as possible. Thank you for your support! In this talk, we will discuss how digital daily tasks are both confounding older adults and introducing new ways of understanding real world functioning, can serve as cognitive prosthetics, and what a generation of digital pioneers have taught us about the promise and perils of technology use for cognitive functioning. Biography: Dr. Jared F. Benge, Ph.D., ABPP, is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist and associate professor with the Department of Neurology at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin and UT Health Austin?s Comprehensive Memory Center within the Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences. He earned his Ph.D in clinical psychology with a major area of study in neuropsychology at the University of Houston, completing an internship in clinical psychology and fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. As a clinician, he specializes in assessment of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias/neurodegenerative disorders. He has over 70 peer reviewed publications and numerous international and national conference presentations focusing on technology in cognitive impairment, early detection of cognitive decline and understanding real-world functioning in older adults with dementia/neurodegenerative disease. His work is supported by the National Institutes of Aging, Alzheimer's Association, Texas Alzheimer's Research and Care Consortium, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Parkinson?s Foundation and other organizations. Dr. Benge mentors students across a variety of disciplines and serves as the director of the Adult Neuropsychology Post-Doctoral Fellowship at UT Austin.
