We would like to announce that we will be having our third Brown Bag Lecture Series talk with Dr. Patricia “Patty” Born on November 6th at 12 PM. We will be serving a light lunch for those attending in person.


Title: "Can I Afford to Retire in Florida? An Analysis of the Changing Cost of Living for Florida Retirees"


Abstract: In 2022, more than 21% of Florida's population was over 65 years old, making it one of the largest retirement populations in the country. Attractions include warm weather, quality hospital and medical centers, and no state income taxes. The cost of living for retirees in Florida has been historically low, but recent climate events are putting pressure on affordability as the cost of property insurance has increased dramatically. This presentation will explore the implications of climate risks on the long-term viability of Florida’s status as a top retirement destination.


Bio: Patty Born is the Midyette Eminent Scholar of Risk Management and Insurance in the Department of Risk Management/Insurance, Real Estate and Legal Studies in the FSU College of Business. Her research focuses on insurance market performance with emphasis on the markets for property coverage and health insurance. She serves on the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology and recently worked with the Rockefeller Institute on evaluation of the health insurance Marketplaces established by the Affordable Care Act.
