Dear ISL affiliates,

The Institute for Successful Longevity at Florida State University, in collaboration with Healthcare, is pleased to announce a Special Issue on “Smart Medicine for Older Adults” in Healthcare (IF: 2.4, https://www.mdpi.com/journal/healthcare/special_issues/9M5952KAF3<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mdpi.com%2Fjournal%2Fhealthcare%2Fspecial_issues%2F9M5952KAF3&data=05%7C02%7Cisl%40lists.fsu.edu%7C60a2e3a4ef6c4aaaa5f608dca0fd56cb%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638562257137071005%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=P8yGHsxMysRlIC8JgakP3cfj7pXbb47Hu5QVzdpvThI%3D&reserved=0>). This Special Issue aims to explore innovative research and developments in the application of smart medicine to enhance the health and well-being of older adults. If you would like to contribute an article to this special issue or serve as a co-editor if you have relevant expertise, please let me know.

This is further information about this issue:

Aging populations are increasing globally, presenting unique challenges and opportunities for healthcare. Smart medicine, encompassing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, and digital health solutions, holds significant promise in addressing these challenges. This Special Issue seeks to highlight cutting-edge research and practical applications that leverage these technologies to improve healthcare outcomes, promote independence, and enhance the quality of life for older adults.

Smart medicine is poised to revolutionize healthcare for older adults in several key ways:

  1. Personalized Care: Smart medicine leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to analyze vast amounts of health data, enabling personalized treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of each individual. By considering genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, smart medicine can provide targeted interventions that improve health outcomes and enhance the quality of life.
  2. Proactive Health Management: Advanced predictive analytics and remote monitoring technologies allow for the early detection of potential health issues before they become critical. Wearable devices, smart sensors, and telehealth platforms can continuously monitor vital signs and other health indicators, alerting healthcare providers and caregivers to any concerning changes. This proactive approach helps prevent hospitalizations and manage chronic conditions more effectively.
  3. Enhanced Accessibility and Convenience: Telemedicine and digital health solutions make healthcare more accessible to older adults, especially those with mobility limitations or those living in remote areas. Virtual consultations, remote diagnostics, and online health management tools enable older adults to receive timely medical care without the need for frequent travel, thus reducing the burden on both patients and healthcare systems.
  4. Support for Independence: Smart home technologies and assistive devices empower older adults to maintain their independence and live safely in their own homes. Innovations such as fall detection systems, automated medication dispensers, and voice-activated assistants can support daily activities and provide peace of mind to both older adults and their families.
  5. Improved Cognitive Health: Technologies designed to support cognitive health can help in the early diagnosis and management of cognitive decline and dementia. AI-driven tools can analyze patterns in speech, behavior, and other cognitive functions, providing early warnings and enabling timely interventions. Additionally, cognitive training apps and games can help in maintaining and even improving cognitive functions.
  6. Cost-Effective Solutions: By enhancing efficiency and reducing the need for acute care, smart medicine can lower healthcare costs. Remote monitoring and telehealth can decrease the frequency of hospital visits, and predictive analytics can help in optimizing resource allocation within healthcare systems.
  7. Data-Driven Insights: The integration of big data analytics in healthcare allows for a deeper understanding of aging processes and population health trends. This data-driven approach can inform policy-making, improve clinical guidelines, and facilitate the development of new therapies and interventions.

Scope and Topics

We invite researchers, clinicians, and practitioners to submit original research articles, reviews, case studies, and perspectives that address various aspects of smart medicine for older adults. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  * AI and Machine Learning in Geriatric Care: AI and machine learning algorithms to predict, diagnose, and treat age-related conditions.
  * Telemedicine and Remote Monitoring: Innovations in telehealth, remote patient monitoring, and virtual care models tailored for older adults.
  * Wearable and Assistive Technologies: Wearable devices, smart sensors, and assistive technologies to support daily living and health monitoring.
  * Data Analytics and Predictive Modeling: The use of big data analytics to understand aging patterns, predict health outcomes, and personalize treatment plans.
  * EHR Integration and Interoperability: Enhancements in electronic health records (EHR) systems to better serve the elderly population, focusing on interoperability and usability.
  * Digital Health Interventions: Evaluation of digital health tools, mobile health apps, and online platforms designed to improve health behaviors and outcomes in older adults.
  * Smart Home Technologies: Development and assessment of smart home environments that enhance safety, mobility, and independence for older adults.
  * Cognitive Health Technologies: Innovations in technologies aimed at maintaining and improving cognitive health, including tools for early detection and management of cognitive decline.
  * Patient Engagement and Empowerment: Strategies and technologies to engage older adults in their healthcare, promoting self-management and active participation.
  * Ethical and Privacy Considerations: Addressing ethical, legal, and privacy concerns related to the use of smart technologies in elderly care.
