From cmclaughlin at fsu.edu Sat Dec 2 13:50:55 2023 From: cmclaughlin at fsu.edu (Casey Mc Laughlin) Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2023 18:50:55 +0000 Subject: [Hpc-notice] FINAL REMINDER: HPC maintenance beginning TOMORROW, Dec 3 - Dec 7 Message-ID: Hi HPC users, This is the final reminder that the HPC will be unavailable starting tomorrow, Sunday, December 3 through Thursday, December 7 for a planned software upgrade. We have set all compute nodes to "DRAIN" state as of yesterday afternoon (Friday, Dec 1). In this state, they are not accepting new job submissions. If any jobs are still running tomorrow morning, they will be killed, and you will need to resubmit them once maintenance is complete. Services Affected The following services will be offline during the maintenance period. * High Performance Computing Cluster (HPC) * Open OnDemand * Spear Nodes Parallel Storage (GPFS) will continue to be available, but access through the HPC login nodes will be unavailable. You will instead need to use the storage export node (export.rcc.fsu.edu). Services Unaffected The following services will be unaffected by the maintenance. * Archival Storage * Globus * Virtual Machines * Data Center Services / Academic Colocation Please be aware of the following: * We are upgrading the default GNU compiler from version 8.3 to version 8.5. You may need to recompile your C/C++/Fortran code if you are using the GNU compilers. * We cannot guarantee all libraries will be available immediately after the upgrade. Please review the list below the signature in this email and contact us if you need us to prioritize any of them. * If you need a newer version of Python (>3.6), we recommend installing it in a Conda environment. You can install any newer version up to and including Python 3.12. Instructions are on our website. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns: support at rcc.fsu.edu. Best regards, The RCC Team ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following libraries and executables may not be available immediately after the upgrade. Please let us know if you need any of these packages: * GNU Compilers v4.8.5 (v8.5.0 and v11.2.1 will be available) * OpenMPI 4.1.3 (v4.1.0 and v2.1.0 will be available for GNU 8.5.0 and Intel 21) * MVAPICH2 2.3.7 (v2.3.5 will be available for GNU 8.5.0 and Intel 21) * NetCDF-CXX 4.3.1 * NetCDF-Fortran 4.4.5 (NetCDF-Fortran 4.5.3 will be available) * NetCDF 4.7.0 (NetCDF 4.8.0 will be available) * bcl2fastq (2.20.0.422) * blat (34) * bbftp-client (3.2.1) * hdf5-1.12.2 * freeFEM -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We will send out an "ALL CLEAR" notice tomorrow morning when this happens, along with a list of any residual issues that we are still cleaning up. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know: support at rcc.fsu.edu. Best regards, The RCC Team -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We appreciate your patience during this upgrade. Due to the large scope and the many moving parts of this project, we are still cleaning up some residual issues. Let us know if you experience any problems after the upgrade. Most libraries are available, but we are working on lesser used ones. Please review the list and recommended workarounds below the signature line in this email. Our Apps specialists will be working through the list in the coming days. Please contact us if you need us to prioritize any package in that list. Important notes: * We upgraded the GNU GCC compiler from v8.3 to v8.5. If you use that compiler, your code will likely need to be recompiled for the new software stack. As with any software upgrade, shared libraries have changed; some have been removed in favor of newer alternatives, and some have new versions. Please let us know if you need help recompiling your code. * OpenMPI is currently available only with the GNU v8.5.0 and Intel v21 compilers. * We upgraded our CUDA libraries and installed both v11.8 and v12.1. Load the cuda/12.1 module to use the newer version. * If you need a version of Python newer than v3.6.8, we recommend installing it in a Conda environment. You can install any version up to and including v3.12. Instructions or on our website. For those of you who have outstanding software installation or upgrade requests, we appreciate your patience. In our triage process, we are prioritizing existing packages before attending to new software requests. This will be the case for the next few weeks. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know: support at rcc.fsu.edu.
