Subject: [gammanoles] Proper screws for Clover Mounting Flanges
All -
While working on the clovers this go-round, I noted that some of the screws that were being used to mount the garnet, anodized-aluminum mounting flanges to the clovers were not correct. Some were far too short, leaving only a few threads engaged, while others were not the correct thread. As I understand it, these are used to structurally support the detectors, so it’s important to get these right.
The correct screw thread for these holes is a metric M5-0.8 (course) thread. Unfortunately, this is so close to the U.S. size #6-32, that these can easily be substituted without one realizing it. The #6-32 are smaller in diameter by about .010” and thus provide less thread engagement.
I will be replacing all of these and marking the dewars before they are sent back down. Additionally, there is a plastic drawer in the Anneal lab with these screws clearly marked should you ever need to replace them. THIS IS NOT A SIZE THAT THE SHOP ROUTINELY STOCKS, so if you need one, get it from the anneal lab.
Once again, the correct screw is an M5-0.8 x 14mm.
cheers,
p.
