Registration for the conference is still open. This is a great, low-cost alternative to travel, as I know many of us are feeling a budget squeeze on our travel budgets. And we will be recording our presentations (except our roundtables) in case you have to miss a session. We hope to see you later this week! Jason FACRL President Jason D. "A library is not just a warehouse for books; it is a physical representation of a set of cultural values that have accumulated over thousands of years. Libraries salvaged and preserved Western civilization; they have been a hub for intellectual exchange, a ladder of social mobility, and a promise of continuity from one generation to the next. It is not mere courtesy that causes people to become silent in the library, as they do in a church: Libraries are sacred places." -from "A Laboratory of Collaborative Learning," by Thomas H. URL: From Jason.Phillips at ucf.edu Wed Oct 21 07:51:39 2026 From: Jason.Phillips at ucf.edu (Jason Phillips) Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2026 11:51:39 +0000 Subject: [Fla-facrl] Statement from FACRL Board - FACRL Encourages Floridians to Learn About Amendment 3 Message-ID: The Florida Association of College & Research Libraries (FACRL) recognizes the essential role that public libraries play in communities throughout Florida. Public libraries provide access to information, technology, educational opportunities, workforce resources, cultural programming, and welcoming public spaces. As Florida voters prepare to consider Amendment 3 on November 3, 2026, FACRL encourages its members and all Florida residents to learn about the amendment, understand its potential effects, and consider its implications before voting. Amendment 3 proposes significant changes to Florida's property-tax system. If approved, it would increase the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, with adjustments for inflation thereafter. It would also reduce the annual assessment-increase cap for non-homestead property from 10 percent to 5 percent. The amendment contains additional provisions affecting homestead exemptions and local property taxation; voters are encouraged to review the official ballot language linked below for the complete proposal. These provisions would provide property-tax relief to eligible homeowners while also reducing the taxable property values from which local governments derive revenue. Florida TaxWatch notes that the amendment does not provide dedicated state funding to replace the property-tax revenue that local governments will lose. Florida's public libraries rely on funding from counties, municipalities, and special districts. Reductions in local property-tax revenues could affect the resources available for library operations, collections, programming, technology, facilities, and staffing. Depending on decisions made by individual local governments, responses could include changes to library funding or services, budget reallocations, or increases in other taxes or fees. Some Florida library organizations have taken positions on this amendment. To learn more about their positions, click on the links for the Florida Library Association and REFORMA de Florida. FACRL encourages our members and Florida voters to review the amendment's language, consider its possible effects on their communities, and seek information from reliable sources before casting their ballots. Learn about Amendment 3. Ask questions. Consider its local impact. Vote informed.
