Specifically, volunteers from all organizations will be trained to respond to requests for assistance. ALA has an existing toolkit that we will receive, plus training for the project leader. Volunteers are expected to maintain confidentiality when handling requests, identifying circumstances where further support is needed from FLA or other in-state groups, and advancing to ALA when necessary. Jenny, FLA's Intellectual Freedom Committee, and myself can provide feedback when handling requests. I expect that we will need a group of volunteers who are interested and committed to providing peer-to-peer support for colleagues across the field (K-12, public, and academic). We are not expecting any financial commitment from FACRL since the grant will cover most associated costs. However, we expect to be able to use grant funds for state conferences (like FAME). We are also hoping that FACRL will promote the helpline to its members and beyond during the two-year period and beyond. ALA has specifically asked for in-state partners on this grant. This is an opportunity for FLA and FACRL to work together on the issue of material challenges. We have also asked FAME to partner with us and are waiting for their leadership to confirm. I expect that there will be a taskforce that will operate across organizations to coordinate the work, so some meetings will be expected. I hope this info provides some insight. Let me know if I can share anything else. -- Shane Roopnarine Shane.Roopnarine at gmail.com Shane.Roopnarine at ucf.edu Schedule a meeting: bit.ly/meet-with-shane On Mon, Jul 8, 2024 at 1:54?PM Diamand, Ana > wrote: Shane, We have a committee meeting today, and I will bring your request to the board. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Dear Ana, Leah, and Clarissa, I am writing on behalf of the Florida Library Association to request your organization's support as a partner in our application for an American Library Association grant. FLA is drafting an application for the State Intellectual Freedom Helpline Grant. This program is designed to enhance available resources for those working to address in-state challenges to intellectual freedom. The helpline will connect those seeking assistance with trained volunteers who will provide confidential feedback and guidance within the limits set by the program (for example, volunteers cannot provide legal advice). This program will also develop our capacity to record additional data on challenges in Florida for ALA. Please see the link at the end of this message for more information. FLA will manage the grant and I will serve as project leader. We are seeking support from other state associations who are facing similar issues. The grant will provide $10,000 over two years. Our plan is to use these funds, as specified in the grant, to promote the project, including funding approved travel. In terms of commitment from FACRL, we are primarily asking for volunteers to help support the program. Volunteers will receive training and coordinate their work with FLA. Grant funds can be used to defray costs for volunteers to state or regional conferences. ALA has asked recipients to demonstrate the project is sustainable beyond the initial two-year period, and we are asking that FACRL continue to support the program with volunteers. We are open to discussing any additional roles for FACRL members. If you are interested, and a more formal arrangement is preferred, we can work to draft a memorandum of understanding outlining the commitments for each organization. Please note that the grant deadline is July 14th, and we are close to finishing the application. We would very much like to have FACRL as a partner on this project. At minimum, we request your permission to name FACRL as a partner for the application. Can your organization provide a response by Thursday, July 11th? If you have any questions, please let me know. I am copying Jenny Abdelnour, FLA's Executive Director, who will help to manage the grant. https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.org%2Fnews%2F2024%2F04%2Fala-announces-state-intellectual-freedom-helpline-program-grants-support-libraries&data=05%7C02%7Cfla-facrl%40lists.fsu.edu%7C1cd6eefc667944b769d208dc9f7ae7fb%7Ca36450ebdb0642a78d1b026719f701e3%7C0%7C0%7C638560597457110881%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=mNtnGmiLYQqdhTKfHynpY2K1czDI%2BbXGnQOdya4O2TE%3D&reserved=0 Sincerely, -- Shane J. In the last few years, we have presented many challenges to academic libraries and librarianship that required us to defend our professional expertise and how we continue to provide value to the communities we serve. Librarians nationwide continue to overcome these obstacles by using innovative problem-solving approaches. This year's call for proposals encourages librarians and library staff to share their creative projects, plans, strategies, and ideas that demonstrate our professional value to our academic community. What innovative projects have you implemented that showcase your expertise? How do we prevent ourselves from being marginalized and having our expertise questioned? How has your academic integrity and freedom been challenged, and how did you respond? What intangible benefits do you bring to your community that may not be seen or valued? What is our responsibility as a profession in defending libraries, those we represent, and the values we hold? We welcome submissions from library staff, students, and faculty. Topics might include but are not limited to: * Book banning and challenges to our collections * Impacts of recent legislation on academic and intellectual freedom * Imposter syndrome across campus and between faculty/staff/librarian lines * Showing value within our institutions to administration, students, faculty, and other stakeholders * Leadership in the face of adversity, both within and beyond the institution * Impacts of AI on reference, instruction, collections, and other library services * Library services and student success * Challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within libraries * Open access and OERs * Scholarly communications * Adapting reference and instruction to institutional pressures * Librarians as advocates/ activists * Services to our institutions, such as data management, digital collections, repositories Do you have an idea for a timely topic outside this year's theme? Please feel free to submit it for consideration! Don't see a trend of interest but have best practices to share? No problem. Submit your proposal anyway. Proposals for presentations, posters, and lightning round presentations can be submitted beginning June 24, 2024, using the online submission form. Rolling reviews and decisions will occur as proposals are received. The final deadline to submit is August 2, 2024. Presenters will receive complimentary registration to the virtual conference. Presentations should be 45 minutes long, including the time provided for questions. Posters will be shared during a virtual poster session at the conference. Lightning round presentations are 5 minutes in length. Please follow this link to the rubric used to score all proposals. Acceptance emails will be sent on or before August 23, 2024. Presentations and posters of superior quality may be considered for future publication in The Reference Librarian, a major refereed journal published by Taylor and Francis. Consider reviewing the Instructions for Authors to learn about the expectations of content and writing for this peer-reviewed journal, which utilizes APA 7th edition style. Please contact editor Lauri Rebar (lrebar at fau.edu) with any questions. New and established authors are welcome! Inquiries may be sent to the FACRL Conference Committee Chair, Jason Phillips, Jason.Phillips at ucf.edu, or the FACRL President, Ana Diamand (diamanda at lssc.edu). Jason D.
