Happy to share news from alum Oualid Mouaness (MFA 97) that the Lebanese film “1982” he wrote, directed and produced will have its release in the US and Canada on JANUARY 19th in Virtual Cinema (Laemmle) and on Digital VOD (Apple, Altavod, and Amazon). The film was Lebanon's Official Oscar Entry for 2020, won the NETPAC AWARD at Toronto International Film Festival, received the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize at EL Gouna FF in Egypt, and holds the SIGNIS Prize from FilmFest DC among other awards in Asia and Europe. The script was a Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab project. It’s being distributed by Utopia Distribution.
'I cannot express how much it means to me that the film is finally getting released in my adopted home country, the US. FSU alum Chris Alender (BFA 98) Executive Produced and his team at Soapbox Films was instrumental in getting this film to the finish line. It was a journey of 9 years from script to release.
The ethos: where there’s a will, there’s a way. Now go make films.

From Geena Hernandez (BFA 20) “I accepted a full-time position as the assistant to the Executive at the Bento Box office in Atlanta. It's remote for now but I'll be moving at the end of the month!”

From Jasper Tatum (BFA ADA15): “I have been working on the new Marvel show Wandavision for Disney+ as a 3D asset artist for The Third Floor, Inc. I worked on the pre and post visualization teams making Characters, props and environments for visual effects sequence visualization. WandaVision premieres January 15th on Disney+!”

“This was the 11th year of our holiday fundraiser (Tallahassee Chapter of Links), but the first-ever virtual holiday affair held by the Links Incorporated. This drive-in movie venue was enlightening, art-focused, fun and most of all safe to attend during this pandemic period. More than 150 persons attended this event. Tickets were sold via Eventbrite. Films by local, award-winning filmmaker Akil Dupont (MFA 10) were featured at this year’s Arts Event. Dupont, in a taped introduction to his films, opened the event by giving movie-goers an overview of film making. Then attendees watched Dupont’s fantastic films, “Underground” and “Silhouette.” Additionally, the following short films were enjoyed: “Riverment” by Shayla Raquel; “WTF—What the Future” by Gabrielle Cornish and “Brand New Day” by Justin Jordan. This was followed by a wonderful and refreshing, taped conversation between local attorney Fred Flowers and former Tallahassee Mayor John Marks, who shared special memories and other observations with attendees.”
Kariim Charlier (MFA15) lost everything he had when his apartment building in NYC burned down. When his classmates offered to raise money to help him he demurred, but asked instead for help for his roommate, who was in the apartment when it caught on fire and sustained injuries in addition to losing everything.
