.
My name is Shahbaz Khan I am a second-year MFA directing specialist from Seattle, and I was one of 14 people arrested by riot police at a nonviolent protest in Tallahassee on September 5th. Since then, at least five other arrest warrants have been issued in relation to the September 5th protest, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has now proposed the "Combatting Violence, Disorder, and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act," a new bill to expand the police's powers in cracking down on protesters with even greater force and less impunity. While this bill most likely won't affect any of the legal proceedings relating to September 5th, I am nevertheless deeply troubled by the violent precedent it could set, and it is for this reason that I am publicly disclosing my status as a member of the Tally 19 (the name we have come to be known following our arrests). On September 5th, 2020, a group of Black Lives Matter protesters responding to a grand jury's failure to indict the police officers who killed Tony McDade, Mychael Johnson, and Wilbon Woodard, were met with a brutal police response from Tallahassee Police Department, acting in conjunction with five other law enforcement agencies including Leon County Sheriff's Office and FSUPD. All told, 14 people were arrested after 300 law enforcement personnel, including riot police and a K-9 unit, were deployed to break up a crowd of maybe 100 demonstrators just outside the capitol. While exercising my first amendment rights to free speech and assembly, TPD riot police yanked me by the hair, shoved my face into the street, and charged me with resisting arrest without violence — a first-degree misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Almost six weeks later, there is still a mark on my cheek from where the road rash I sustained during my arrest used to be. Other members of the Tally 19 are facing felony charges with up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 fines.Tallahassee is no stranger to violence at protests. Earlier this year on May 30th, a man drove a pickup truck through a crowd of BLM protesters demonstrating in the immediate wake of George Floyd's murder, injuring at least two people. In the week prior to September 5th, a right-wing counterprotester pulled a gun on demonstrators marching in solidarity with Jacob Blake and other shooting victims in Kenosha. However, given that the State Attorney's office filed no charges against either of these men, combined with the provision in DeSantis's proposed bill absolving drivers of liability for any injury or death caused if "fleeing for safety from a mob" at an "unpermitted" protest (like how the march on September 5th has so often been described by local media), the violence this bill sets out to punish is clearly not the kind of violence we've actually had happen at Tallahassee protests. To my fellow members of the FSU Film community, I urge you all to call State Attorney Jack Campbell's office and demand he drop all charges against the Tally 19. In a political climate where distrust between law enforcement and the communities they're supposed to protect has once again reached a new high, the violence which Tallahassee Police Department and other agencies employed during the September 5th protest can be seen as little more than an act of state-sanctioned political repression. No one should have to live in fear of police violence against them while expressing their commitment to liberty and justice for all.Thank you for your time.
