Code for Bias / U.S.A., United Kingdom, China (Director, screenwriter and producer: Shalini Kantayya) — Exploring the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. World Premiere

From Lauren Brinkman (BFA 12) “For the past many months I’ve been busting my butt Additional Editing and Lead AE’ing a film called THE DISSIDENT that is premiering at Sundance this year. It’s about the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and when I first heard the breaking news on this story I had no idea it would become such a big part of my life a year later. THIS IS NOT A HAPPY STORY. But it is an important one. Can't wait for you all to see it! See ya'll in Park City!!”

From Marty Lang (MFA 04): “ Thrilled to announce that THE RIDE, a Webseries I associate produced, will world premiere at Sundance! It's directed by and stars Linas Phillips (RAINBOW TIME), and it's executive produced by the Duplass Brothers. Hope to see lots of FSU folk in Park City!”

Check out the latest trailer and marvel at t https://tinyurl.com/rfuu7zn”

From Jim Ed Wills (MFA 11). “I left Virginia and moved to LA this fall to pursue editing, but before I left, I made a good impression on a gaffer of the new Walking Dead spin-off series, and he plugged me into a direct line with the business rep for the local 728. The calls before Thanksgiving just kept coming, and so far, I've got 13 union days out of 30. It seems to have slowed down for now, but I'm hoping I can get the rest within a year’s time. If I can focus on getting my days while it's hot, then I can join and have my hand in two lines of work. Speaking of other work, I'd love to do some more DIT and VFX. I even got some new headshots to try my hand in acting again. I'm finishing up a short film that I wrote and directed. After that, I'll be looking to make the next one. There is so much opportunity out here it’s overwhelming!”

From Rashi Bahri Chitnis (MFA 03) “https://www.indiawest.com/…/page_c33cbea2-a2f7-5749-a41d-e2…<https://www.indiawest.com/eedition/page-b/page_c33cbea2-a2f7-5749-a41d-e2814db4a4bb.html?fbclid=IwAR3ZGRmdoOBkvO0H8xqFsibQCAl7gqmMNN-HLXmaAuUvEoWtZLpxoyffn5c>

Thanking INDIA WEST for the wonderful article! Excited to be on the front cover!”

From Jon Martin (MFA Writing 2019). “ I recently started a new job as a full-time Production Assistant at Mad Old Nut Productions. MONP is a boutique Post Production services company that rents Avid equipment and offices to shows such as The CW’s All American, Batwoman, Katy Keene, Riverdale (my personal favorite), Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, CBS’s God Friended Me, and Fox’s upcoming show Deputy just to name a few. As a CW fanatic I’m thrilled to have landed this incredible opportunity to work so closely with so many of my favorite shows!”

From Samuel Curtis (BFA 13) “I started a film program in Los Angeles at the poetry based non-profit organization “Get Lit - Words Ignite”<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/getlit.org/__;!!PhOWcWs!jLcHaQIMeivMFLMKkoUqwAnC1z0wXUJ0nRmWW8jJMPeBDv9lpueoe3SJ2ppLF3lNFj0$> about three years ago, merging poetry and cinema to create a Poetic New Wave program, as I like to call it. We’ve had many successes in our first few years: a prestigious grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that helped to give our burgeoning program status, legitimization; an NBCUniversal Project Innovation Grant to support our in-house poetic content studio<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.youtube.com/user/glwordsignite__;!!PhOWcWs!jLcHaQIMeivMFLMKkoUqwAnC1z0wXUJ0nRmWW8jJMPeBDv9lpueoe3SJ2ppL3cLelWI$> which is my main position within the organization as our Head of Productions. We now also weekly co-produce the Final Draft Podcast, “Write On”<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/blog.finaldraft.com/topic/podcast__;!!PhOWcWs!jLcHaQIMeivMFLMKkoUqwAnC1z0wXUJ0nRmWW8jJMPeBDv9lpueoe3SJ2ppLEcpAZYI$> out of our offices. And we are currently launching in the new year, in partnership with Final Draft and the Writers Guild Foundation, “The Poetic Screenwriters Lab." I am also a producing partner in the foundation of Literary Riot Inc.<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.literaryriot.com/__;!!PhOWcWs!jLcHaQIMeivMFLMKkoUqwAnC1z0wXUJ0nRmWW8jJMPeBDv9lpueoe3SJ2ppLMSPoqMU$>, our social enterprise production company arm that deals in talent management and development. And, through that, the culmination of, and one of my proudest achievements since developing this poetic program, is a feature film directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, for which I was an Associate Producer and an Actor/Singer/Songwriter along with my students. The semi-autobiographical poetic stories of my students’ lives are told in this film “Summertime” to World Premiere at the at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival on Day One in the NEXT category of programming.<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.sundance.org/blogs/news/2020-sundance-features-announced__;!!PhOWcWs!jLcHaQIMeivMFLMKkoUqwAnC1z0wXUJ0nRmWW8jJMPeBDv9lpueoe3SJ2ppLGjI0dG4$> Both Peter Davis (BFA 13) and Kat Barnette (BFA 15) also worked on this film. I hope to see and meet with many of y’all at Sundance this year and to discuss the potential for future collaborations. Please reach out for more details or to correspond with me before Sundance at samuel at getlit.org<mailto:samuel at getlit.org>.””

From Stacy Milbourn (MFA Wriitng 14) “I'm Script Coordinator on the untitled Hedy Lamarr miniseries on Showtime. It's run by Sarah Treem, creator of The Affair, and stars Gal Gadot as Hedy Lamarr.”

From Jennie Townsend (BFA 08). “I'm currently working as a creative content specialist at Moose Toys. It's a bit of a vague title but basically I work with a creative director to oversee all the entertainment that gets made to support our toys. I'm the creative lead on the animation for one of our biggest brands, Kindi Kids (https://bit.ly/33PqYzo<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F33PqYzo%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR0K_wLXtGVigcuPtlvUh3en3--IcHW58J8W6NotLYcVMby66k-LiBn2sCg&h=AT3NHj-DcjQOa5dEQxW3iVy-hV4ATTqbatUhZtWqX2lk1PgSsvRsN-Q9q9kpE81ENQuLFfLNduykVe4RrosPfXZ1prbMiHbkR0AlhTXlJN-QMNf7jOm_wLGWYO9mEjo84Ri9YPTI> - season 2 coming soon!!), I wrote a mini-movie for Treasure X (warning, highly toyetic: https://bit.ly/2rfwJsJ<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F2rfwJsJ%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR30EzGrwO3E10UpLLOEAjbH14Ro3p5v4YTFiMGydoVr5FhXZVlm6WNj2Uc&h=AT3NHj-DcjQOa5dEQxW3iVy-hV4ATTqbatUhZtWqX2lk1PgSsvRsN-Q9q9kpE81ENQuLFfLNduykVe4RrosPfXZ1prbMiHbkR0AlhTXlJN-QMNf7jOm_wLGWYO9mEjo84Ri9YPTI>) and I've been a secret script doctor on countless other projects, most recently sneaking jokes into Goo Jit Zu (https://bit.ly/2qoaEIe<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F2qoaEIe%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR3Ewqhi4Mj6uKVO33MaDDXiP4MjqxaNnp4ykENebj02zmNA54HvFIJ69AY&h=AT3NHj-DcjQOa5dEQxW3iVy-hV4ATTqbatUhZtWqX2lk1PgSsvRsN-Q9q9kpE81ENQuLFfLNduykVe4RrosPfXZ1prbMiHbkR0AlhTXlJN-QMNf7jOm_wLGWYO9mEjo84Ri9YPTI>) -- to anybody with young children, I apologise for potentially contributing to them pestering you to buy more toys.
And while I'm here, I'll recommend a kids show I really, really love called Bluey - it's a fantastic, hilarious and incredibly relatable Aussie cartoon about a family of Blue Heeler dogs. I had nothing to do with the creation of it, but Moose did just start selling Bluey toys, so I'm using that as my excuse! Disney have just released it in the US and I can't recommend it enough.”
