FSU’S GREAT GIVE is a 36-hour online giving in support of academic programs is coming up.   After our very successful Great Give last year, the Film School has chosen to again to seek donations to the Meryl Warren Fund,  which my husband endowed to support alumni activities such as our LA, ATL and NY screenings and receptions.   You can make contributions March 22 and 23 – I’ll be sending you lots of reminders when the time comes!

Supervising producer Jacob Motz (MFA 06)  has been elevated to the role of director of development.  In his new role, Motz will be responsible for overseeing the company’s slate of formats which includes 40 unscripted and scripted shows. Some of the series in Portal A’s portfolio include Song Voyage, a six part-part musical comedy series featuring YouTube’s The Gregory Brothers, and the upcoming Alt Web, a curated anthology of docs found on the internet which chronicle the strangest stories from the digital age. Motz will be working on a variety of unscripted and scripted projects for the studio’s Originals. The Atlanta Film Festival is proud to announce the winners of the 2018 Screenplay Competition. Chosen from over 1,000 submissions, these screenplays represent those writers whose screenplays have earned:  Free access to the 2018 ScreenCraft Writers Summit and Atlanta Film Festival, a staged reading of selected scenes from their work, and once in a lifetime one-on-one mentorship opportunities. And the winner is:  Scout by Samuel Goodwin (BFA 14), Georgia, USA  “A young African American woman, working on an oil pipeline in the remote mountains of Colorado, finds herself isolated and pinned down by an unseen assailant with a hunting rifle.”

Congratulations to two of our alums who are Season 7 Semi-Finalists in the Pitch Competition ATX Television Festival.  Rika Bhakta (MFA 16) pitched “Custom Made” and Michael Seminerio (MFA 03), with Greg Jacoby and Rob Murphree, pitched “New Day Comic”.  Good luck in the finals!

From Brad Mauer (BFA 09)  “- Tuesday, March 13th @ 10:00pm, the show I’ve been working on for the past year, For The People, airs on ABC. I started as a Set PA on the Pilot episode one year ago and now I’m the Assistant Production Coordinator, handling all things office. Executive Produced by Shonda Rhimes, it’s a show about young prosecutors and public defenders in Manhattan. This show got me into the union (IATSE Local 871, woo!) and was personally meaningful to me for many reasons. It’s also good! I hope people tune in.

Rafael Lorie (BFA 2014) and Valerie Brooks (BFA 2014) are moving from NYC to Miami this Spring. Rafael has worked as a Director/Designer for Spotify's Soundtrack de Mi Vida, and Cook Thugless' Music Videos and as a Prop Master on HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness. Valerie has directed and written several short films. She has shot content for Hennessy via Partizan, was recently the gaffer on the feature film Simply Sylvio (SXSW 2017) and has edited trailers for Amazon Lore via Courageous (CNN Branded Content.) Rafi and Valerie are looking for production and art related work down in Miami, where they will also be continuing to write and develop their own narratives and digital art.
