Some major changes this year in our alumni events! Want to share with you some of the information that Dean Braddock shared with our Dean’s Alumni Council:

“First, I am hoping to concentrate our major alum events - DAC meetings, screenings, and film forums - into one week in each city. The big part of this change is adding the film forum to the same week. The film forums, which were started by the LA DAC (big shout-out to Chris Alender and our LA alums), have now expanded to Atlanta and New York. These forums are exciting, and I see them as the hubs around which we can foster continued engagement of our established and newly graduated alums in a way that the screenings are not.

The second change is the screenings of our student work. In Atlanta we have partnered with the Atlanta Film Festival to screen our recent student work. The upside of this is lower cost and a larger, more diverse audience. The New York screening has always been part of the bigger, “Noles in New York” FSU Arts Week created by the FSU Foundation. The only location we have continued to host our screenings unattached or un-partnered is in LA. Until now.

This year for the LA screening we are going to try a partnership with well-established HollyShorts Film Festival at the TCL Chinese 6 Theater. The screening will still be open to our students and alumni but will also bring in the HollyShorts audience.

The idea of simplifying our oldest and longest continuous running event, in the area of our largest alumni base, is the biggest shift for us in terms of tradition. I am both excited by this effort and worried to be the killer of a tradition.”

We’ll have more information soon on a Film Forum in LA, but in the meantime, here’s the screening info and the films we’ll be screening (films selected by members of the Dean’s Alumni Council):

Thursday, March 29th, Tentative time is 8pm, location is TCL Chinese Theater 6 (Grauman's Annex) @ 6801 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028

The Stranger (directed by Katherine Oostman, MFA)
The Girl and the Bird (directed/animated by Emily Mills, BFA)
Mama I Wanna March (directed by Malcolm Baity, MFA)
Going Home (directed by Jared Hopkins, BFA)
Basics (directed/animated by Spencer Smyth, BFA)
Server (directed by Nikki Lee, MFA)
Trapped (directed/animated by Zach Hoskin, BFA)
Twins (directed by Yi Tao, MFA)
The Great Wall of Vicky Lynn (directed by Yu Ying Chien, MFA)

From Josh Crute (MFA 12). “My first children's picture book, Oliver, the Second Largest Living Thing on Earth, is slated to be in bookstores across the country this September. It's already available for pre-order<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.amazon.com_Oliver-2DSecond-2DLargest-2DLiving-2DThing-2DEarth_dp_1624145779_ref-3Dsr-5F1-5F1-3Fie-3DUTF8-26qid-3D1516904238-26sr-3D8-2D1-26keywords-3Doliver-2Bthe-2Bsecond-2Blargest-2Bliving-2Bthing-2Bon-2Bearth&d=DwMFaQ&c=HPMtquzZjKY31rtkyGRFnQ&r=XK14IrgIaB-M4DhdHvEVmw&m=T-WDlJjebtTSaCUi2FfiZZP5NTJsvNQrp_a1UbLQt-0&s=NRiAFB_SVCpuF0oNYSoPaGWIgAid32kHn6BzxV7WIek&e=> on Amazon!”

From Alicia Dean (MFA 08). “I had the opportunity to work on Paramount Network's new television series Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner. I was one of the full time Addl 2nd ADs on the series. We filmed in Park City, UT and Darby, MT. The show's first season is written and directed by Taylor Sheridan. It was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed getting to travel around out west. I am currently gearing up to work as the Key 2nd AD for Tales from the Hood 2 filming just outside of New Orleans and working as a Production Coordinator for an ultra low budget horror film, The Convent, in the meantime.”

Mark Perez (FSU alum who, with his wife Valarie Ianniello, created our Perez Fellowship) wrote Game Night, which comes out on February 23. In looking at the cast and crew I found alums who worked on the show: Josh Mikel (FSU Theatre) is Colin; Persephone Rose (MFA 16) is a club girl; Tiffany Moore (MFA 05) was production secretary; Adam Richards (BFA 07) Casting Associate; and Jill Somers (BFA 14) was PA.

Congratulations to Dan Ast (BFA 05) and his team. They received 11 nominations for the Indy Series Awards:

The film stars JEREMY ALLEN WHITE (Shameless) and MAIKA MONROE (It Follows).”

From Dana Kemp Strauss (BFA 97) “I've been doing great here in DC... the freelance life has treated me well. For the past few years I've been writing for the Nat Geo Wild series "Dr. Oakley: Yukon Vet" at Lucky Dog Films in Silver Spring. Between stints on that show, I've also been doing development for other companies around town. Currently, I'm writing a branded docu-series about the science of kindness for Discovery's "Agency" (the arm of Discovery that does a lot of commercial / branded stuff). It's really an incredible project - one that's definitely needed in this atmosphere right about now. In other news, we had identical twin daughters a year ago in September. They're 16 months old now, walking and even talking a bit... and really keeping us busy! They're the sweetest little gals and boy they sure do keep this old mom hopping! We're thrilled.”

“Knight Chair Speaker Series (At FAMU) Celebrates Black History Month with Emmy-Nominated Actress Kelsey Scott (MFA FSU) and Former Ebony and Jet Photographer Fred Watkins: …. The Knight Chair Speaker Series will continue on Friday, February 9, 2018, with “A Crash Course in Writing for the Screen” with Emmy-nominated Actress and Screenwriter Kelsey Scott, an alumna of FAMU and Florida State University. The free workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication, 510 Orr Drive, Tallahassee, Fla., is open to the public and requires pre- registration at http://sigc.famuedu/index.cfm/events/ [cid:image001.png at 01D39B64.228FCA40]
Kelsey, who is best known for her role as Anne Northup in the Oscar-winning “12 Years A Slave” and her harrowing arc as Wes Gibbins’ mother, Rose, on “How to Get Away with Murder,” has credits that have spanned a diverse range of projects. Her television appearances include “NCIS,” “Grey's Anatomy,” “True Detective,” “House,” “Army Wives” and “The Young and the Restless.” In 2017, she received a Primetime Emmy Nomination for her role on AMC's “Fear the Walking Dead: Passage.” She also penned the Sony Pictures thrillers “Motives” and “Motives 2: Retribution” for FAMU alumni Rob Hardy and Will Packer's Rainforest Films, and parlayed her experience as a script consultant
to spearhead the first screenwriting curriculum at Golden State College. She later returned to Florida State as a Visiting Filmmaker in Residence. She currently consults for studio and private clients, and continues to write commissioned scripts. Scott has a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from FAMU’s SJGC and a Master of Fine Arts in Film from Florida State University's College of Motion Picture Arts.”

And while we are on the subject of the beautiful and talented Kelsey Scott, watch for her February 3 (Saturday) on Lifetime in her role as mom in “The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar)”. Also Kelsey has just joined the Abrams Artists Agency<https://www.facebook.com/Abrams-Artists-Agency-225526494169297/?fref=mentions> family!

From Tatiana Bears (BFA 13) “ I spent a month up in the Catskill Mountains with a group of people who would end up being some of my closest friends putting our heart and soul into a film that we all believed needed to be told - The Miseducation of Cameron Post. This week, that film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance! Couldn’t be happier for the cast and crew of this marvelous film and can’t wait for the rest of the world to see it!”

And, Night Comes On a film I Line-Produced this summer won the NEXT Innovator award at Sundance! Might not be as grand as the Grand Jury but Night Comes On deserves the love and so much more, I and is having it’s World Premiere this week at Rotterdam.

Also, First Match is in competition at SXSW! So excited for this gem of a film, had an amazing experience production managing a beautiful crew. Was such an incredible honor to work on these films and to be able to help tell stories written and directed by women about women.

And, Are We Not Cats<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.facebook.com_arewenotcats_-3Ffref-3Dmentions&d=DwMFaQ&c=HPMtquzZjKY31rtkyGRFnQ&r=XK14IrgIaB-M4DhdHvEVmw&m=_TcrWYpngaJeNdqa_5uOOM6JG75nJ_ypeIqVu9rHJ3M&s=HR0E796TFVydf31N1ZbnUxcdRIaWvDnB5COJUB2fWCc&e=> is coming to THEATERS in LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK and SAN FRANCISCO!!
