Attn All Students,

I received a call from the director of the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department. She said they are happy to provide permits to film in their parks if they are able. But she also has some concerns about some of their interactions with our students in the past:

Timing: They would like to have 2 weeks notice before filming. Oftentimes, students will contact them just a few days before production. They will not be able to give permission on such short notice since the permit process takes time to circulate between their main office, the park managers, and anyone else who may need to be involved. This is not a quick process. So if you need a park, plan way in advance.

Popularity: Students tend to request the more popular – and thus populated – parks in town (e.g. Lake Ella, Cascades Park). These are much more difficult to permit since they are almost always heavily populated. They have 77 parks in their system, so consider looking for one that is less popular.

Content: They will not permit any filming that involves violence, weapons, shouting, or any other suspicious or disturbing activity that may alarm or upset the general public.

I would suggest that if you need to do something on short notice and/or with suspicious content, that you look for a private property rather than a park. Also, keep in mind that there is a distinction between the Tallahassee Parks & Rec (for most parks within the city limits) and the Leon County Parks & Rec (for parks outside the city limit, but within Leon County). Neighboring counties (Gadsden, Wakulla, and Jefferson counties) each have their own Parks & Rec Depts as well. But all of these departments will have a similar permitting process, as well as time and content constraints.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
