When Claudia's sixteen-year-old son, Ross, announces he's quitting high school and leaving home a year early, she panics because they're so disconnected she's afraid she'll lose him forever. Then a small miracle happens—they discover they have the same escape fantasy, to head west on I-10 to where she grew up, in Corpus Christi, Houston, and Kingsville, Texas. So, on a tight budget and with the expense clock ticking, they travel from Tallahassee to Texas and back, 2,400 miles in one week.

But the distance they cover transcends the miles that they drive. Along the way, Claudia recounts the sometimes hilarious, often harrowing, but ultimately courageous Texas family story that defined her childhood and is Ross's heritage—a story that centers on her own mother's path-breaking journey from a family history of dysfunction, alcoholism, and abuse to create a life for herself and a loving home for her children. As Claudia and Ross spend time together, sharing stories and laughter, she's able to see more clearly the young man her son has become, and he takes responsibility for his unhappiness and finds a solution.

With prose that is nimble, vivid, and rich in humor, here is a spirited testament to the crucial bond between mothers and children.”

From Holly Pearson (BFA 12) “This year has been wonderful and crazy. Started this year in London filming a documentary with the ska-band The Interrupters and Green Day, then worked with Fox again and assistant directed their 4-week test run game show, Punchline. Since then I've been working at Legendary Digital/Nerdist studios technical directing their Twitch/Alpha content. Shows like Critical Role, Bizarre States, and Nerdist News Talks Back. Last month I had the honor to show call the G70 Genesis Concert with Gwen Stefani, Andra Day, and CL in Seoul, South Korea. It was a concert they threw in the middle of the city that we streamed all over the world. I have now also started working at another internet studio ReachMe.TV, directing their weekly Hollywood entertainment show. So it's been a crazy busy year and I don't even know what day it is anymore (;p) but i'm loving all of it! And I keep running into more and more FSU people on set it's amazing how strong of a community it is out here. Got to also Assistant Direct the very FSU alumni heavy feature film, Darkness in Tenement 45, directed by Nicole Groton (BFA 11). That was an entire female ATL and it was a POWERHOUSE of efficiency and professionalism. Loved working with those ladies.”
