Florida State University’s Antonio Méndez Esparza, an acclaimed film director who teaches in the College of Motion Picture Arts, has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. Esparza, an assistant teaching professor at FSU’s film school, is one of 173 Guggenheim Fellows selected for the class of 2017. They were among a group of about 3,000 artists and scholars who participated in the competition.Esparza, who won the fellowship in the Film-Video category of Creative Arts, is a director and screenwriter whose film “Aquí y Allá” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and was awarded the Grand Prix. The film traveled to more than 60 film festivals around the world and  earned great reviews and awards. Esparza co-founded Aquí y Allí Films, a feature film production company with a special interest in nurturing the work of young filmmakers. Born in Madrid, Esparza earned a law degree before moving to the United States, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University and began developing his filmmaking career. FSU President John Thrasher notified Jason and Tony by letter of their award.  Each were selected by a committee of faculty and students who reviewed Jason and Tony’s nomination binders that included nominations, responses to student questionnaires and support materials.  The University Teaching Award recognizes teaching excellence as multi-faceted, involving areas such as providing a positive role model to students, imparting a respect for truth and a love of learning, challenging students' thinking and assumptions, showing respect for all persons, and innovative instructional techniques.  Each will receive a $2000 honorarium.

These students epitomize the definition leadership through their exemplary contribution to FSU.

From Christian Klein (BFA ADA15) “I recently began working as an editor for the first time and absolutely love it. I have a part-time position with a small, fun production company called Lure Films (https://www.lurefilms.com/) and am working with YueCheng Liu to cut a short documentary for OhMore Media (https://vimeo.com/ohmore). On my days off from that, I also drop in to SoapBox Films to help them with VFX for Fox's "The Mick".  It's good to be back in Los Angeles!”
