Subject: EOAS Colloquium, 3:00 PM, Sep 4, 2026, at EOA1044

Hi all,

I am happy to announce that we will start our EOAS colloquium this Friday, September 4, 2026. The inaugural speaker of this academic year's series will be Dr. Vasu Misra. The following is the information about the colloquium:

Speaker: Dr. Vasu Misra, Florida State University

Title: How anomalous is 2026 turning out to be from an Indian Monsoon perspective

Abstract:

The evolving El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is grabbing our attention—but a remarkable story has already been unfolding over the Indian subcontinent. The 2026 Indian summer monsoon began with an unusually sluggish and rainfall-deficient phase, raising an intriguing question: How anomalous is 2026 from an Indian monsoon perspective, and how well have we anticipated it?

In this talk, I will place the unusual evolution of the 2026 monsoon in the context of historical variability and examine what seasonal forecasts available in early June could—and could not—tell us about the season ahead. I will discuss several well-known sources of predictability, including ENSO, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and other slowly varying ocean–atmosphere processes, as well as the fundamental challenges that limit seasonal prediction of the monsoon.
Beyond 2026, the talk will use the Indian monsoon as a window into a broader question in climate science: How much of a season's behavior can we predict months in advance, and where does predictability break down?

Time: 3:00 PM, Friday, September 4, 2026

Location: EOA 1044
