Please join us for a seminar at 3 pm in Room 1044 Tuesday October 27 by Dr. Javier Beron-Vera, who is a candidate for our physical oceanography faculty position. The title and abstract of his talk are provided below.

Title: Coral Connectivity across the Eastern Pacific Barrier: A Probabilistic Dynamical Systems Approach

Abstract: The Eastern Pacific Barrier is considered a major obstacle to coral dispersal, yet genetic evidence suggests connectivity between Clipperton Atoll and the central Pacific. Using satellite-tracked drifter observations, Markov chains, transition path theory, and Bayesian inference, I will investigate the oceanic pathways that may explain this apparent contradiction. The results reveal a seasonally controlled pathway from the Line Islands to Clipperton, with travel times compatible with extended larval dispersal timescales.
